Get Well Soon

My grandson Ron and his 7-yearold son, Reegan, were doing an after-Christmas errand at the corner market. While they were checking out, the cashier leaned over the counter and asked Reegan, “What did you get for Christmas?” With all seriousness, he said, “Mom got a bad cold and we got grilled cheese sandwiches for an awful long time.”

Faith and Footwear

One Sunday my wife joined me in the sanctuary and said the bottom of her shoe had fallen off. After the first hymn I told her I would pray that her shoe would be heeled and for its sole.

Father Knows Best

Every Christmas my dad would make his annual trip to town, which was 45 minutes away, to look for Christmas gifts for us 13 kids. One year Dad set out to bargain hunt at his favorite store: Kmart! He was browsing when he heard the famous pitch come across the system: “Attention Kmart shoppers, we have a blue-light special going on in our men’s department, so stock up!” He quickly walked to the back and found out they were selling men’s long johns, all size large, for $1 a pair—an unbelievable bargain. Being extremely practical (and frugal), he thought they would make the best presents for all of his girls and scooped up 10 or 11 pairs. You can imagine the shock on our faces when we tore into packages of men’s large long johns on Christmas morning. These were definitely not the presents we had dreamed of. But Dad was just as pleased as a peacock. I did end up wearing mine— turned around backward and with an extra-large safety pin to hold them up. That winter was one of Maine’s coldest, but we all stayed warm in our supersized long johns. Dad was right; it was the best gift ever.
