LORA’S TIPS FOR THE TREK

-

Plan ahead, and assume it will take you twice as long to hike out as it does to hike in.

Hike with a sturdy pair of walking sticks to help you push off and to steady each step. Walking sticks will spare your knees!

A pair of good-quality, broken-in hiking boots is essential.

Carry a headlamp and lightweight flashlight with extra batteries and bulbs in case you end up on the trail after dark.

Tuck a few pieces of moleskin in your pack for the inevitable blisters.

Pack an emergency blanket to keep you warm should temperatures drop you’re while still on the trail.

Keep a whistle where you can reach it easily in case you fall and need to summon help.

When on the trail, uphill hikers and mules have the right of way. Step off the trail on the uphill side away from the edge.

Most important: Carry drinking water with you at all times. Be sure to drink and eat while hiking to keep up your energy. Plan your visit: nps.gov/grca
