Here, Kitty Kitty

Two of our cats died last winter, so we promised our kids that we’d look for a kitten. One evening, my husband, Makandl, and I were driving on a rural highway here in Montana. When we came across the flats, it was snowing so hard that we couldn’t tell if we were on a road or in a field. Suddenly we saw a tiny kitten sitting in front of us. Makandl slammed on the brakes, and we slid a little till we came to a stop. He was hooting and hollering because we’d found the kids a kitten. Makandl, a wideshouldered cowboy who isn’t afraid of anything, got out of the car and walked over to the animal. He picked it up and cradled it in his arm. As he turned it around to get a good look at the animal’s face, he turned as white as snow. I don’t know who tried to get away quicker—my husband or the bobcat. When we told the kids, they thought their daddy was the bravest guy around. After a while they started telling the story as if they were there, and I still get, “Remember when Daddy picked up the lion?” MARGUERITE WHITLOCK Columbus, Montana

Embarrassing Moment

On her first visit to Texas, a woman visited a cowboythemed nightclub. Excusing herself to freshen up, she headed to the restroom. A minute later she returned to her date and asked, “Am I a steer or a heifer?” MAGGIE BELTZ Pierce, Nebraska
