1. MAKING FRIENDS

I discovered a group of joyful horses down my country road. This horse and I have a special bond. Whenever I need someone to just be there, I can visit these horses just a short walk away. MELANIE BEILNER

2. ACTION SHOT

I was about to take a photo of the maple tree when a gust of wind created a confetti-like atmosphere that mirrored being on the middle of a ticker-tape parade. DWAYNE BUTLER

Lisbon, Wisconsin

3. JUST THE RIGHT SIZE

We visited Bishop’s Orchards in Guilford, Connecticut, a huge property with a pumpkin patch. Ben got to pick out his own special little pumpkin. KRISTA KNUDSON

4. FALL SPLENDOR

Walking through the woods near Rainy Lake in Voyageurs National Park, with the sound of the wind rustling through the trees and leaves crunching underfoot, makes for a memorable afternoon. KALLIE OLSON

International Falls, Minnesota

5. A CARPET OF GOLD

Fall is my favorite season. I am blessed to live in Michigan, where in October breathtaking views like this one are everywhere you look. KIM YOUNG

Niles, Michigan

6. FLIGHT PATTERN

Every year the Sandhill cranes stop along the Platte River in Nebraska during their spring and fall migration. They roost in great numbers in the river at night and then leave the water for nearby cornfields during the day. CATHY BRUHA

Comstock, Nebraska

7. PUPPY LOVE

Our white Lab, Wesson, had her first litter of 10 puppies. The puppies were so playful and neighborhood kids came over almost daily to play with them. It took all of us to keep them contained for this picture. AUDREY SMITH

Woodstock, Illinois
