HEMINGWAY HOMECOMING

Check out the village of Walloon Lake for family-friendly activities this summer. The village celebrates Ernest Hemingway’s birthday July 21.

GO WITH A GUIDE

Trek through Hemingway’s stomping grounds with Chris Struble, owner of Petoskey Yesterday. He’s an expert in all things Hemingway and Petoskey. petoskeyyesterday.com

Or check out True North Trout; its guides know where the fish are biting in northern Michigan, especially in Hemingway country. It offers float trips, walk-and-wade trips and the lessons you need to catch plenty of fish. truenorthtrout.com

HORTON BAY GENERAL STORE

Built in 1876, the store is mentioned in some of Hemingway’s short stories. Check out the memorabilia or climb onto a stool at the well-worn oak soda fountain for lunch and a malt. Then book a room in the bed-andbreakfast. hortonbaygeneralstore.com

RED FOX INN

Right next to Horton Bay General Store, the Red Fox Inn, a former boardinghouse, is now a bookstore and curio shop. The owner’s grandfather taught Hemingway’s father to fish. Hours are pretty random, but if you’re already at the general store, it’s worth the walk across the parking lot.

STAFFORD’S PERRY HOTEL

Make like Hemingway with a visit to the hotel where he stayed in 1916. He also hung out at City Park Grill—once known as the Annex. Local lore says Hemingway favored the second bar stool inside the entrance of City Park Grill. Chris disputes that. He says men bellied up to the bar because it didn’t have stools back then. Either way, they serve up a lovely Hemingway Daiquiri along with good food. theperryhotel.com
