Roan Mountain State Park

My husband and I love to hike. We’ve been to 15 national parks, but it’s hard to beat good ol’ Tennessee! Roan Mountain State Park is one of the most beautiful places in our country. The Roan balds (mountain summits covered in grass) offer 360-degree views, and the Appalachian Trail crosses right over it. We were on an overnight backpacking trip and made it to the summit of Grassy Ridge Bald right as the sun set. It was a sight to behold!

THREE BALD HIKES

There are 12 miles of trails in the park, some leading to Grassy Ridge, Round and Jane balds.

CAST A LINE

The Doe River flows through the park, and the water temperature is cool enough year-round to support three different types of trout.

WATCH FOR FLOWERS

The Rhododendron

Festival is a must-do in June, when the blossoms cover Roan Mountain.
