Phelps Lake
Hidden on the southern end of Grand Teton National Park, Phelps Lake is the sixth-largest in the park. To reach this gem within a gem, park at the Whitehorse/ Death Canyon trailhead and hike 1.2 miles to the Phelps Lake Overlook, then down steep and rocky switchbacks to the lake. No trek to see Phelps Lake is complete without taking a leap off of “jumping rock” on the lake’s northeastern shoreline. Keep cool by jumping 20 to 30 feet into the frigid and refreshing water below.
HIKE THE LOOP
For the best mountain views, hike the 7.2-mile Phelps Lake Loop Trail in a ounter lo kwise dire tion.
WILDLIFE WATCHING
Moose and bear are quite prevalent in the area, so keep your eyes open and hike with bear spray.
