Waterrock Knob Trail
I have hiked the Waterrock Knob Trail
(milepost 451.2 on the Blue Ridge Parkway) many times and the views never get old. Below is one of my favorites overlooking the little town of Maggie Valley.
Although the hike is a short 1.2 miles, it is fairly strenuous, which is a small price to pay for the fantastic vistas. Whenever I feel like I need to get in shape for longer hikes, Waterrock Knob serves the purpose. The reward is not just a physical one, however, it’s the beauty and solitude the trail offers.
SAVOR THE SUN
Waterrock Knob Visitor Center is at one of the highest points along the parkway, making it an ideal place to watch the sun rise and set. Bring a folding chair, sit back and relax. nps.gov/blri
WILDFLOWER WATCH Though rhododendrons get all the attention in
June, August belongs to the black-eyed Susans that carpet the mountains.
CAMP WITH WILDLIFE
Want to see elk in the wild? Pitch a tent about 20 miles away at the Cataloochee Campground, which is surrounded by mountains and home to elk herds.
