TOWER-STAY TIPS
.Rent
a fire tower online through recreation.gov up to six months in advance. Rates and available lengths of stay vary by facility. .Plan
on bringing your own food, bedding, firewood and water. Fire towers contain few if any amenities. Most facilities are not equipped with electricity or toilets. .Backcountry
fire towers do not have cell service. Be sure to input the tower’s GPS coordinates into a device that is not dependent on cell service.
.Notify
the local ranger station before heading to the tower. Most towers are locked and you’ll need instructions for a lock code or where to find the key. .Many
towers are located in bear country. Know and obey the local regulations regarding food storage. .Practice
“leave no trace” by packing out everything you bring with you.
