Gauge

22 sts and 28 rows/rnds = 4 inches/10cm in St st. 22 sts and 34 rows/rnds = 4 inches/10cm in Seed St. To save time, take time to check gauge.

Spe­cial Ab­bre­vi­a­tions

Slip marker (sm): Slip marker from LH to RH nee­dle. Make 1 Left (M1L): In­sert tip of LH nee­dle from front to back un­der strand be­tween sts; knit into back of re­sult­ing loop.

Pat­tern Stitch

Seed St (even num­ber of sts) Row/Rnd 1: *K1, p1; rep from * to end. Row/Rnd 2: Knit the purl sts and purl the knit sts.

Rep Row/Rnd 2 for pat.

Spe­cial Tech­nique

Jog­less Stripes *Work first rnd as usual with new color. On 2nd rnd of new color, slip first st of rnd purl­wise and work rem of rnd as es­tab­lished. Rep from * with ev­ery color change.

Pat­tern Notes

The dress is worked from lower edge of bodice up­ward. Af­ter sides are seamed, stitches are picked up along bot­tom edge of bodice and worked in rounds down to hem.

While work­ing color changes, join and cut colors if in­structed; oth­er­wise, carry un­used strands loosely up in­side of work un­til no longer needed.

Boat mo­tif is worked in du­pli­cate stitch (see page 128) af­ter gar­ment is com­plete.

Row 1 (RS): Work 6 sts in Seed St, pm, work 8 sts in Seed St, pm, k24 (26, 30, 34), pm, work 8 sts in Seed St, pm, work 6 sts in Seed St. Row 2 (WS): Work 6 sts in Seed St, sm, work 8 sts in Seed St, sm, p24 (26, 30, 34), sm, work 8 sts in Seed St, sm, work 6 sts in Seed St. Rows 3–10: Con­tinue work­ing in pat as es­tab­lished.

Shape Arm­holes

Bind off 6 sts at beg of next 2 rows— 40 (42, 46, 50) sts.

Work 10 rows even. Next 4 rows: Work Seed St across all sts. Shape Neck Di­vi­sion row (RS): Work 8 sts, join 2nd ball of A and bind off next 24 (26, 30, 34) sts, work to end.

Yoke

Work­ing both sides of yoke at once, work 19 (23, 27, 31) rows even or un­til arm­holes mea­sure 61/2 (7, 73/4, 81/4) inches. But­ton­hole row (WS): [Work 3 sts, bind off 2 sts for but­ton­hole, work to end] twice. Next row: Work across, cast­ing on 2 sts above bound-off sts from pre­vi­ous row. Work 4 rows even. Bind off all sts.

Front Bodice

Work same as back bodice ex­clud­ing but­ton­holes.

Body

Sew side seams. With RS fac­ing, beg at un­der­arm seam and us­ing A, pick up and knit 102 (108, 114, 120) sts around cast-on edge; pm for beg of rnd and join. With A, knit 4 rnds. Drop A and join B (do not cut A). With B, knit 2 rnds. *With A, knit 4 rnds. With B, knit 2 rnds Rep from * 1 (1, 2, 3) time(s). With A, knit 1 rnd. Work even in es­tab­lished stripe pat un­til body mea­sures ap­prox 61/2 (71/2, 81/2, 91/2) inches, end­ing with 3 rnds A. Cut B.

Ruf­fle

Purl 1 rnd.

Knit 2 rnds. Inc rnd: *K2, M1L; rep from * around— 171 (180, 189, 198) sts.

Knit 3 rnds. Next rnd: Knit and dec 1 (0, 1, 0) st(s) at end of rnd—170 (180, 188, 198) sts. Work 3 rnds in Seed St. Bind off in pat.

Fin­ish­ing

Weave in ends. Block to fin­ished mea­sure­ments. Place top edges of back yoke over top edges of front yoke, over­lap­ping 8 rows. Mark po­si­tions of but­ton­holes on front straps. Sew 1 but­ton to each front strap at marked po­si­tions.

Work boat mo­tif on front bodice, us­ing du­pli­cate st fol­low­ing chart and cen­ter­ing on panel.

Hat

Band

With C, cast on 90 (90, 99, 108) sts; pm for beg of rnd and join, be­ing care­ful not to twist sts.

Knit 5 rnds. Change to k1, p1 rib and work 6 rnds. Knit 1 rnd. Cut C and join A. Knit 3 rnds. Inc rnd: *K3, M1L; rep from * around—120 (120, 132, 144) sts.

Work even un­til piece mea­sures 6 inches.

Shape Crown

Note: Change to dpns when sts no longer fit com­fort­ably on cir­cu­lar nee­dle. Rnd 1: *K8 (8, 9, 10), k2­tog, pm; rep from * around—108 (108, 120, 132) sts. Rnd 2 and ev­ery other rnd: Knit.

Cut A, join B. Dec rnd: *Knit to 2 sts be­fore marker, k2­tog; rep from * around—96 (96, 108, 120) sts.

Rep Dec rnd [ev­ery other rnd] 6 (6, 7, 8) times—12 sts. Last rnd: K2­tog around—6 sts. Cut yarn, leav­ing a 12-inch tail. Us­ing tapestry nee­dle, thread tail through rem sts and pull tight.

Fin­ish­ing

Weave in ends.

Sew 2 but­tons to cen­ter front of band as shown in photo.
