Slip, slip, purl (ssp): Slip 2 sts 1 at a time kwise to RH nee­dle; re­turn sts to LH nee­dle in turned po­si­tion and p2­tog-tbl—a left-lean­ing sin­gle dec. Make 1 Right (M1R): In­sert LH nee­dle from back to front un­der strand be­tween sts; knit into the front of the loop. Make 1 Left (M1L): In­sert LH nee­dle from front to back un­der strand be­tween sts; knit into the back of the loop.

Pat­tern Notes

Use a sep­a­rate ball of yarn for each col­or­block sec­tion, twist­ing yarns to pre­vent holes. On back and front, cut A or B af­ter com­plet­ing stripe us­ing that color; do not cut MC. On front, cut MC if nec­es­sary af­ter com­plet­ing each stripe in A or B.

Work de­crease rows as fol­lows: Work k1, k2­tog at be­gin­ning of right-side rows and ssk, k1 at end. Work p1, ssp at be­gin­ning of wrong-side rows and p2­tog, p1 at end.

Work in­crease rows as fol­lows: K1, M1R, knit to last stitch, M1L, k1.

Back

With MC, cast on 99 (111, 123, 135) sts. Work 4 rows in K1, P1 Rib. Work in St st un­til piece mea­sures 2 inches, end­ing with a RS row.

Shape Bust

Inc 1 st each end on next row, then [ev­ery 10 rows] 6 times—101 (113, 125, 137) sts.

Work 11 rows even, end­ing with a WS row.

Shape Arm­hole

Main­tain­ing pat, bind off 6 (6, 6, 7) sts at beg of next 2 rows.

Dec 1 st each end [ev­ery row] 2 (2, 4, 4) times, then [ev­ery RS row] 8 times— 69 (81, 89, 99) sts.

Work even un­til arm­hole mea­sures ap­prox 7 inches, end­ing with Row 11 of stripe in A.

Shape Neck

P20 (26, 29, 33), bind off cen­ter 29 (29, 31, 33) sts, purl to end of row.

Work­ing both sides at once with sep­a­rate balls of yarn, dec 1 st at each neck edge [ev­ery row] 7 (7, 8, 8) times— 13 (19, 21, 25) sts each shoul­der.

Work even un­til arm­holes mea­sure 8 (81/2, 9, 91/2) inches.

Bind off rem sts.

Front

Work same as back, work­ing Stairstep Stripes pat for front, un­til arm­holes mea­sure ap­prox 11/2 inches, end­ing with Row 15 of stripe in B.

Mark cen­ter 19 (19, 21, 23) sts.

Shape Neck

Main­tain­ing pat and con­tin­u­ing to dec at arm­hole edges, purl to cen­ter marked sts, bind off cen­ter 19 (19, 23, 25) sts, work to end.

Work­ing both sides at once with sep­a­rate balls of yarn, bind off at each neck edge [3 sts] once, then [1 st] once.

Dec 1 st at each neck edge [ev­ery row] 8 times—13 (19, 21, 25) sts each shoul­der.

Fin­ish­ing

Block pieces to mea­sure­ments.

Sew shoul­der seams. Sew side seams. Weave in all ends.

Neck Edg­ing

Note: If not fa­mil­iar with sin­gle cro­chet (sc), see Cro­chet Class on page 128. With RS fac­ing, join MC at right shoul­der and work 1 row of sc around neck, mak­ing sure to keep edge flat.

Arm­hole Edg­ing

With RS fac­ing, join MC at un­der­arm and work 1 row of sc around arm­hole edge, mak­ing sure to keep edge flat. Rep for other arm­hole. Weave in rem ends.
