Spe­cial Tech­niques

I-Cord: *Slide sts to other end of nee­dle, pull yarn across back, k6, do not turn; rep from * un­til cord is de­sired length. Bind off loosely. I-Cord Knot: Make I-Cord longer than needed. Us­ing ex­tra length shape as de­sired. Un­ravel any “ex­cess” length, bind-off at ex­act needed length and se­cure in place.

22 sts and 28 rnds = 4 inches/10cm in St st. To save time, take time to check gauge.

Pat­tern Note

When us­ing mul­ti­ple mark­ers in a round, it is help­ful to use a dif­fer­ent-color marker at the begin­ning of the round.


Us­ing A, cast on 72 (84, 96) sts; pm for beg of rnd and join, be­ing care­ful not to twist.

*K2, p2; rep from * around un­til piece mea­sures 2 (21/4, 21/2) inches. Knit 6 (7, 8) more rnds. Change to B and knit 6 (7, 8) rnds. Change to A and knit 6 (7, 8) rnds. Shape Crown

Dec rnd: Change to B, *k10, (12, 14), k2­tog, pm; rep from * around—66 (78, 90) sts. Rep Dec rnd un­til 6 (6, 6) sts rem. Change to Color A and make a 6–8inch I-Cord.

Bind off loosely.


Tie I-Cord into a knot, un­rav­el­ing any ex­cess length; firmly se­cure to top of hat.

Weave in ends.
