In­spi­ra­tion for this new ap­proach to a tra­di­tional Scan­di­na­vian de­sign came from an ar­ti­cle writ­ten by El­iz­a­beth Zim­mer­mann for the Oc­to­ber 1982 is­sue of Knit­ting World.

Spe­cial Ab­bre­vi­a­tions

Make 1 Left (M1L): In­sert LH nee­dle from front to back un­der the hor­i­zon­tal strand be­tween last st worked and next st on LH nee­dle; knit through back of re­sult­ing loop. Make 1 Right (M1R): In­sert LH nee­dle from back to front un­der the hor­i­zon­tal strand be­tween last st worked and next st on LH nee­dle; knit through front of re­sult­ing loop. Cen­tered Dou­ble De­crease (CDD): Slip next 2 sts as if to k2­tog, k1, p2sso to dec 2 sts. Slip marker (sm): Slip marker from LH nee­dle to RH nee­dle.

Hat Stripe With WS fac­ing, *knit 4 rnds B, 2 rnds A; rep from *. Mitt Stripe With WS fac­ing, *knit 4 rnds B, 2 rnds C; rep from *. Flower (mul­ti­ple of 12 sts) Pat is worked from a chart.

Pat­tern Notes

The Stripe pats are worked with the wrong side fac­ing. The hat is turned in­side out af­ter band is com­pleted and worked with wrong side fac­ing to end. The mitts are turned in­side out af­ter lower edge is com­pleted, and then turned right-side out to fin­ish up­per hand above thumb open­ing.

When work­ing Stripe pat­tern, carry yarn not in use loosely up wrong side (knit side) of fab­ric; do not cut.

Hat

Edg­ing With cir­cu­lar nee­dle and A, cast on 110 sts; pm for beg of rnd and join, be­ing care­ful not to twist sts.

Knit 15 rnds. Inc rnd: *K11, M1L; rep from * around—120 sts. Cut A.

With C, knit 1 rnd, purl 3 rnds. Cut C. Band Work 15-rnd Flower pat fol­low­ing chart. Cut A. With C, knit 1 rnd, purl 1 rnd. With B, knit 1 rnd. Body Turn hat in­side out and pre­pare to work in op­po­site di­rec­tion with WS fac­ing as fol­lows: Slip first st on RH nee­dle to LH nee­dle, take yarn be­tween nee­dles to the back, slip st back to RH nee­dle.

With WS fac­ing, work 6-rnd Hat Stripe pat 9 times. Cut A.

With B, knit 4 rnds. Shape Crown Note: Change to dpns when sts no longer fit com­fort­ably on cir­cu­lar nee­dle. Set-up rnd: With B, k10 and place lock­ing st marker on last st, [k20 and mark last st] 5 times, k10. Dec rnd: [Knit to 1 st be­fore marked st, CDD] 6 times, knit to end—108 sts.

Mov­ing mark­ers up as nec­es­sary, rep Dec rnd [ev­ery other rnd] 8 times—12 sts. Knit 1 rnd. Cut yarn, leav­ing an 8-inch tail. Us­ing ta­pes­try nee­dle, thread tail through rem sts and pull tight.

Fin­ish­ing

Weave in all ends

Block.

Fin­ger­less Mitts

Cuff With dpns and A, cast on 48 sts; dis­trib­ute sts evenly around 4 dpns, then mark beg of rnd and join, be­ing care­ful not to twist sts. Knit 10 rnds. Cut A. With B, knit 1 rnd. Turn mitt in­side out and pre­pare to work in op­po­site di­rec­tion with WS fac­ing as fol­lows: Slip first st on RH nee­dle to LH nee­dle, take yarn be­tween nee­dles to the back, slip st back to RH nee­dle.

With WS fac­ing, work 6-rnd Mitt Stripe pat 6 times. Thumb Gus­set Con­tin­u­ing in Mitt Stripe pat, work as fol­lows: Rnd 1: Knit. Rnd 2: K23, pm, M1R, k2, M1L, pm, knit to end of rnd—4 gus­set sts be­tween mark­ers. Rnd 3: Knit. Rnd 4: Knit to marker, sm, M1R, knit to marker, M1L, sm, knit to end— 6 gus­set sts.

Rep [Rnds 3 and 4] 5 times— 14 gus­set sts.

Work 9 rnds even, end­ing with first C rnd of 9th stripe. Next rnd: Re­mov­ing gus­set mark­ers when you come to them, with C, knit to marker, bind off 14 gus­set sts, knit to end.

Con­tin­u­ing with C, knit 1 rnd, cast­ing on 2 sts over thumb open­ing—48 sts.

Knit 1 rnd; cut C. Up­per Hand Turn mitt RS out.

With RS fac­ing, work 15-rnd Flower Chart. Cut A and B. With C, knit 1 rnd, purl 3 rnds. Bind off loosely pwise.

Fin­ish­ing

Weave in all ends.
