81/2 inches wide x 8 inches high (not in­clud­ing strap)


• DK weight yarn (100% su­per­wash merino wool; 136 yds/50g per ball): 1 ball each brown (MC) and pur­ple (B); 50 yds each light blue (C), light green (D), white (E), dark red (F), gold (G) and pink (H) • Size 5 (3.75mm) straight and dou­ble-point nee­dles (set of 3) or size needed to ob­tain gauge • Size F/5 (3.5mm) cro­chet hook • Blunt ta­pes­try nee­dle • Stitch mark­ers • 31/2-inch square of card­board for



24 sts and 32 rows = 4 inches/ 10cm in St st. To save time, take time to check gauge.


With MC, use pro­vi­sional cast-on (see page 111) to cast on 45 sts.

Work in St st un­til piece mea­sures 61/4 inches and mark both sides of fab­ric to in­di­cate bot­tom.

Con­tinue in St st for an­other 61/4 inches. Place live sts on waste yarn. Re­move pro­vi­sional cast-on and place live stitches on waste yarn.

Block rec­tan­gle to 81/2 inches wide by 121/2 inches long, mak­ing sure to square cor­ners at right an­gles.

Fold rec­tan­gle in half at marked po­si­tions.

Sew side seams us­ing mat­tress st (see page 112). Eyelets & Top Edge Slip 90 live sts to 3 dpns dis­trib­uted 28-34-28.

Join MC at side edge and knit 7 rnds. Eye­let rnd: K5, yo, *k2­tog, k7, yo; rep from * around to last 4 sts, k2­tog, k2. Knit 7 rnds. Change to B. Knit 3 rnds. Note: If not fa­mil­iar with sin­gle cro­chet (sc), pi­cot and slip stitch (sl st), see Cro­chet Class on page 113. Re­fer to En­tic­ing Em­bel­lish­ments on page 18 for pi­cot bind-off.

With cro­chet hook, work pi­cot bind­off as fol­lows: *6 sc, pi­cot; rep from * around, sl st to join, cut yarn and weave in end.


Note: Re­fer to En­tic­ing Em­bel­lish­ments on page 18 for de­tailed in­struc­tions as needed. Fol­low­ing charts, du­pli­cate-stitch pat across up­per and lower edge of front and back 1 inch from top and bot­tom.

With D, em­broi­der stems with run­ning chain and feather stitches.

With D, knit 3 leaves and sew with whip­stitch (see page 112) to sur­face of bag.

With E, make 4 bob­bles and sew to sur­face of bag for flower cen­ters; with H, em­broi­der petals around bob­bles us­ing sin­gle chain stitches.

With F, em­broi­der 3 flower cen­ters us­ing satin stitch; with G, sur­round each cen­ter with petals us­ing sin­gle chain stitches.

With C, em­broi­der French knot ac­cents as de­sired.


With B, cast on 4 sts, leav­ing a 6-inch tail.

Work I-cord (see page 111) 32 inches long. Weave in ends. Weave I-cord through eyelets start­ing at cen­ter hole on front of bag.
