Bright and cheer­ful stripes are adorned with whim­si­cal ap­pliqué and em­broi­dery to give this sweater a play­ful look. Hem­line and cuff slits add a re­laxed feel.

18 sts and 24 rows = 4 inches/10cm in St st. To save time, take time to check gauge.

Spe­cial Ab­bre­vi­a­tions

Make 1 Left (M1L): In­sert LH nee­dle from front to back un­der hor­i­zon­tal strand be­tween last st worked and next st on LH nee­dle; knit through back of re­sult­ing loop. Make 1 Right (M1R): In­sert LH nee­dle from back to front un­der hor­i­zon­tal strand be­tween last st worked and next st on LH nee­dle; knit into front of re­sult­ing loop. Slip, slip, purl (ssp): Sl 2 sts 1 at a time kwise to RH nee­dle; re­turn sts to LH nee­dle in turned po­si­tion and p2­togtbl—a left-lean­ing sin­gle dec.

Pat­tern Notes

Pullover is worked in pieces and then sewn to­gether, leav­ing side slits at the bot­tom of the body and sleeves.

When work­ing stripes, for any stripe of 6 rows or fewer, carry yarn not in use loosely along the side; do not cut. Cut yarn for stripes of more than 6 rows.

Work waist and sleeve cap de­creases as fol­lows: K2, ssk at be­gin­ning of right­side rows and k2­tog, k2 at end.

Work arm­hole de­creases as fol­lows: K1, ssk at be­gin­ning of right-side rows and k2­tog, k1 at end.

Work neck de­creases as fol­lows: Ssk at be­gin­ning of right-side rows and k2­tog at end; work p2­tog at be­gin­ning of wrong-side rows and ssp.

Work waist and sleeve in­creases as fol­lows: K2, M1R at be­gin­ning of right­side rows and M1L, k2 at end of row.

Us­ing size 8 nee­dles, A and pro­vi­sional cast-on (see page 111), cast on 73 (79, 85, 95, 103, 113) sts.

Work 6 rows in St st, beg with a knit row.

Change to size 10 nee­dles and B. Pi­cot row (RS): K1, *yo, k2­tog; rep from * to end. Purl 1 row. Change to size 8 nee­dles and A. Work 6 rows in St st. Join­ing row (RS): Care­fully re­move pro­vi­sional cast-on and place sts on spare size 8 nee­dle. Fold hem to WS at turn­ing row. *Knit 1 st from front nee­dle tog with 1 st from spare nee­dle; rep from * to last st, k1. Work 5 (5,7, 7, 9, 9) rows even. Work all rows of Stripe Pat 1.
