This simple lacy shrug makes a great layering piece for spring.
16 sts and 18 rows = 31/2 inches/9cm in Fern pat. To save time, take time to check gauge.
Seed St (even number of sts) Row/Rnd 1 (RS): *K1, p1; rep from * to end. Row/Rnd 2: Knit the purl sts and purl the knit sts.

Row 5: K3tog, k4, yo, k1, yo. Row 7: K3tog, k3, [yo, k1] twice. Row 9: K3tog, k2, yo, k1, yo, k2. Row 11: K3tog, [k1, yo] twice, k3. Row 12: Purl.

Slip, slip, slip, knit (sssk): Slip next 3 sts individually kwise, return to LH needle, k3tog-tbl.
Shrug is worked flat from side to side. Ends of shrug are partially seamed to create the finished shape. Optional cuffs are picked up from the sleeve edges and worked in the round.
Circular needle is used to accommodate large number of stitches. Do not join; work back and forth in rows.
Border Cast on 150 (158, 166, 174, 182) sts. Work 3 rows in Seed St. Purl 1 row. Body Set-up row (RS): Work 3 sts in Seed St (edge sts), pm; work [8-st Right Fern panel and 8-st Left Fern panel] 9 (9, 10, 10, 11) times, work [Right Fern panel] 0 ( 1, 0,1, 0 ) time(s), pm; work 3 sts in Seed St (edge sts).
Keeping first and last 3 edge sts in Seed St, work in established pats until body measures approx 50 (511/2, 521/2, 531/2, 543/4) inches, ending with Row 5 or 11 of panels. Border Work 3 rows in Seed St.
Bind off loosely in pat.
Note: If not familiar with crochet slip stitch seam (sl st seam), refer to Crochet Class on page 97. Referring to Figure 1, fold piece in half lengthwise with RS tog.
Using crochet hook, work 11-inch sl st seam (see page 97) to join edges of lower sleeve. Rep for other side. Weave in ends. Block to measurements Cuffs (optional) *With RS facing and using dpns, pick up and knit 16 (16, 17, 17, 18) sts along a sleeve edge, centering picked-up sts over seam; using cable cast-on (see page 95), cast on 16 (16, 17, 17, 18) sts; pm for beg of rnd and join—32 (32, 34, 34, 36) sts.
Work 1 inch (or desired length) in Seed St. Bind off in pat. Rep from * for 2nd cuff.
