Cables on the Catwalk
Worked seamlessly, this chunky lace pullover works as a vest, hoodie or oversize turtleneck.
Woman’s X-small/small (medium/large) Instructions are given for smaller size, with larger size in parentheses. When only 1 number is given, it applies to both sizes.
Chest: 30 (45) inches Length to shoulder:
22 (23) inches • Rowan Big Wool (super bulky weight; 100% merino wool; 87 yds/100g per ball): 7 (9) balls steel blue #52 • Size 11 (8mm) 24-inch circular needle • Size 13 (9mm) 24-inch circular needle
or size needed to obtain gauge • Size J/10 (6mm) crochet hook • Stitch markers (one unique to indicate
beg of rnd)
19 sts (panel plus braid) = 71/2 inches wide and 43/4 inches high To save time, take time to check gauge.
Slip marker (sm): Slip marker from LH to RH needle. Slip, slip, slip, knit (sssk): Sl 3 sts 1 at a time kwise to RH needle; return sts to LH needle in turned position and k3tog-tbl—a left-leaning double dec.
2x2 Rib (multiple of 4 sts) Rnd 1: *K2, p2; rep from * around.
Rep Rnd 1 for pat. Leaf Panel (13-st panel) Note: A chart is provided for those preferring to work Leaf Panel from a chart. Rnd 1: K9, k3tog, yo, k1, yo. Rnd 2 and all even-numbered rnds: Knit. Rnd 3: K7, k3tog, [k1, yo] twice, k1. Rnd 5: K5, k3tog, k2, yo, k1, yo, k2. Rnd 7: K3, k3tog, k3, yo, k1, yo, k3. Rnd 9: Yo, k1, yo, sssk, k9. Rnd 11: K1, [yo, k1] twice, sssk, k7. Rnd 13: K2, yo, k1, yo, k2, sssk, k5. Rnd 15: K3, yo, k1, yo, k3, sssk, k3. Rnd 16: Knit.
Rep Rnds 1–16 for pat.
Note: Read through entire Braid directions before starting. Make Braid: Slip the next pair of adjacent knit sts off LH needle. Allow sts to drop to cast-on rnd (for rib) or purl rnd (between Leaf Panels), forming “ladders.” With RS facing, insert crochet hook into space above lowest 2 “ladder-strands”; catch the strands with the crochet hook, forming a loop. *Insert hook into the space above the next 2 strands, creating a 2nd loop, then draw new loop through first loop on hook. Rep from * to top of double dropped-st column. Separate strands into 2 sts at the top and place on RH needle. Work rem of rnd as established, working Braid at each pair of knit sts. If there is an uneven number of “ladderstrands” in the column of dropped sts, work first loop with just 1 strand, then continue as above.
Garment is worked in the round from the bottom to the armholes. Armholes are created by binding of stitches on 1 round, then immediately casting on the same number of stitches above the bound-off stitches on the following round. The deep ribbed cowl continues in the round.
With smaller circular needle and using long-tail cast-on (see page 76), cast on 72 (92) sts; pm for beg of rnd and join, being careful not to twist sts.
Work 10 rnds 2x2 Rib. Braid rnd: *Make Braid, p2; rep from * around.
Change to larger needle. Inc rnd: Knit and inc 4 (3) sts evenly around—76 (95) sts.
Purl 1 rnd. Set-up rnd: *Work 13-st Leaf Panel, p2, k2, p2, pm; rep from * around.
Work even, maintaining 6 sts of established Rib between Leaf Panels, until piece measures 22 (23) inches, ending with an odd-numbered rnd. Braid rnd: *P15, Make Braid, p2; rep from * around, removing all markers; cut yarn.
Slip 7 sts from LH to RH needle and rejoin yarn; pm for new beg of rnd.
Purl 1 rnd. Armhole bind-off rnd: Bind off 18 (20) sts for armhole; k20 (28) sts for front; bind off 18 (20) sts for armhole; k20 (27) sts for back. Armhole cast-on rnd: Using cable cast-on method (see page 79), cast on 18 (20) sts for armhole and shoulder; p20 (28); cast on 18 (20) sts for armhole and shoulder; p20 (27). Cowl Change to smaller needle and purl 1 rnd.
Work in 2x2 Rib until piece measures 20 inches from armhole cast-on rnd. Braid rnd: *Make Braid, dropping sts down to first purl rnd of cowl, p2; rep from * around. Purl 1 rnd. Knit 1 rnd. Purl 1 rnd. Loosely bind off all sts kwise.
Weave in ends. Block to measurements.
Stitches have been dropped. Use crochet hook to chain up.
Chain all the way up until dropped stitches have been worked. Separate chain into two stitches on working needle after braid is complete.
Make sure to grab 2 strands for each chain stitch.
After braid is complete, stitches are worked back into the pattern.
