This is a sweet, func­tional and prac­ti­cal dress for your lit­tle sweet­heart. Be­cause chil­dren grow so quickly, this de­sign is made to adapt to their quickly chang­ing sizes.

Gauge

22 sts and 28 rows = 4 inches/10cm in St st with larger nee­dles. To save time, take time to check gauge.

Pat­tern Stitch

Seed St (odd num­ber of sts) Rnd 1: *K1, p1; rep from * to last st, k1. Rnd 2: Knit the purl sts and purl the knit sts as they face you.

Spe­cial Tech­nique

I-Cord: With dpns, cast on 3 sts. *Do not turn, slide sts to other end of dpn, pull yarn across back, k3; rep from * un­til cord is de­sired length. Bind off.

Pat­tern Note

Dress is knit from the bot­tom up to the arm­holes in the round. At that point, the dress is worked flat, work­ing the front shap­ing and then the back shap­ing; neck­band and straps are hor­i­zon­tal ex­ten­sions of front and back. Pocket and toy are worked sep­a­rately.

Body

With B and smaller nee­dle, cast on 99 (101, 107, 115, 121, 127, 131, 143) sts, pm and join to work in the rnd, be­ing care­ful not to twist sts. Rnds 1–8: Work in Seed St. Rnd 9: Switch to larger nee­dle and knit 1 rnd. Rnd 10: With A, k1, k2­tog, knit to end of rnd—98 (100, 106, 114, 120, 126, 130, 142) sts.

Knit un­til piece mea­sures 91/2 (10, 101/4, 101/2, 11, 111/2, 12, 121/2) inches from cas­ton edge, end­ing last rnd 3 sts be­fore the beg-of-rnd marker.

Front

Shape Arm­holes Row 1 (RS): Bind off 5 (6, 5, 5, 6, 5, 5, 5) sts (re­mov­ing marker), k44 (44, 48, 52, 54, 58, 60, 66), place the rem sts on waste yarn or a st holder. Row 2: Purl. Row 3 (dec): K1, ssk, knit to last 3 sts, k2­tog, k1—2 sts dec. Row 4: Purl.

Arm­hole Edg­ings With B and smaller dpns, make sure that the RS is fac­ing front, reat­tach yarn at the top edge of the right front arm­hole just be­low the yoke, pick up and knit 1 st in each st around the arm­hole. Bind off all sts kwise.

Rep for op­po­site arm­hole, beg at the top edge of the left back arm­hole. Pocket With B and smaller nee­dles, cast on 22 sts. Rows 1–4: Work in St st. Row 5 (RS, inc): K1, kfb, knit to last 2 sts, kfb, k1—24 sts. Row 6: Purl. Rows 7 and 8: Work in St st. Row 9 (inc): K1, kfb, knit to last 2 sts, kfb, k1—2 sts inc. Row 10: Purl.

Rep [Rows 7–10] 4 more times—34 sts. Rows 11–14: Work in St st. Row 15: K15, bind off 4 sts, knit to end—30 sts. Row 16: P15, cast on 4 sts, knit to end—34 sts. Rows 17–20: Knit.

Rnd 3: Knit. Rnd 4: *K1, kfb; rep from * to end of rnd—27 sts. Rnd 5: Knit. Rnd 6: *K2, kfb; rep from * to end of rnd—36 sts. Rnd 7: Knit. Rnd 8: *K3, kfb; rep from * to end of rnd—45 sts. Rnd 9: Knit. Rnd 10: *K4, kfb; rep from * to end of rnd—54 sts. Rnds 11–16: Knit. Rnd 17: *K4, k2­tog; rep from * to end of rnd—45 sts. Rnd 18: Knit. Rnd 19: *K3, k2­tog; rep from * to end of rnd—36 sts. Pull tail through sts on cast-on edge. Lightly stuff sun with waste yarn pieces or fiber­fill. Rnd 20: Knit. Cut yarn and pull tight through rem sts. Sun Rays Make 7. With D and dpns, cast on 20 sts, leav­ing a long tail for sewing. Spread sts evenly across 3 dpns, pm and join to work in the rnd, be­ing care­ful not to twist your sts. Rnds 1–4: Knit. Rnd 5 (dec): *Ssk, k6, k2­tog; rep from * once—16 sts. Rnd 6: Knit. Rnd 7 (dec): *Ssk, k4, k2­tog; rep from * once—12 sts. Rnd 8: Knit. Rnd 9 (dec): *Ssk, k2, k2­tog; rep from * once—8 sts. Rnd 10: Knit. Rnd 11: Ssk, k2­tog, ssk, k2­tog—4 sts. Rnd 12: K2­tog, k2­tog; pass 2nd st over the first and off the nee­dle, cut yarn and pull tight through last st.

Fold each ray in half along the shaped edges and, us­ing the long tail, sew both sides of the cast-on edge tog as you sew the rays around the out­side of the sun, us­ing the photo as a guide. Tether With D and dpns make 1 I-cord 5 inches long.

Bind off all sts, cut yarn, leav­ing a 12-inch tail, and pull tight through last st. Weave in all ends. Wash and block to mea­sure­ments. Sew the pocket to the front of the dress, slightly off-cen­ter and tilted, us­ing the photo as a guide.

Sew the sun se­curely to the I-cord tether.

Tie the I-cord tether se­curely to the hole in the pocket.
