Pattern Notes

The body of this cardigan is worked in 1 piece to the armholes, then divided to work the fronts and back separately. The shoulders are joined using a Norwegian braided bind-off. Stitches for the sleeves are picked up around the armhole, then worked back and forth using short rows (see page 79) to shape the cap. After the cap is shaped, the stitches are rejoined to work the sleeve in the round to the cuff.

Join Shoulders Designer Note: Several years ago a shop owner asked me if I knew of a Norwegian bind-off method that resulted in a cabledlooking seam that was worked with a lot of shifting stitches back and forth between needles. At that time I hadn’t heard of one, and over the next few years, I was unable to find a description of how to work such a bind-off. Then about a year ago, I came up with this method while playing with the idea. I’m not sure if this is exactly how the bind-off she was shown was worked, but I hope I’m close. Place sts for right front and right back on dpns or circular needle. Note: If using circular needle, make sure the armhole edges are closest to the needle tips. Holding pieces with WS facing you and the armhole edgings next to each other, make sure the longer tail is on the right needle.

Rep Steps 1–5 until 2 sts rem on LH needle.

Slip both sts tog kwise to RH needle, then lift the right st over the left st and off the needle. Fasten off the last st. Rep for left shoulder. Sleeves With shorter circular needle and RS facing, beg at center underarm, pick up and knit 71 (77, 83, 89, 95) sts evenly around armhole. Pm for beg of rnd.

Pm 20 (23, 26, 29, 32) sts from beg and end of rnd, with 31 sts between markers for pat. Shape Cap Note: The sleeve cap beg with Row 1 of the Sleeve Cable. Make sure to add sts into the Cable pat as you work the short rows, and once 31 sts are worked in pat, work the rem sts at beg and end of row in St st. When working wrapped st on subsequent row, hide the wrap. Short-Row 1 (RS): Knit to marker, sm, work first 24 sts of Sleeve Cable, W&T. Short-Row 2 (WS): Work 17 sts in pat, W&T. Short-Rows 3 and 4: Work to wrapped st, work wrapped st, work 3 more sts, W&T. Short-Rows 5 and 6: Work to wrapped st, work wrapped st, work 2 more sts, W&T. Next 4 (6, 6, 6, 6) Short Rows: Work to wrapped st, work wrapped st, work 1 more st, W&T. Next 10 (12, 16, 20, 24) Short Rows: Work to wrapped st, work wrapped st, W&T. Next 4 Short Rows: Work to wrapped st, work wrapped st, work 1 more st, W&T. Next 2 Short Rows: Work to wrapped st, work 2 more sts, W&T—4 (4, 5, 6, 7) sts rem out of work at each end of row. Next row (RS): Work to beg-of-rnd marker, do not turn.

Start working in the rnd as follows: Double Dec Rnd: K1, k3tog, work to last 4 sts, sssk, k1—4 sts dec. Work 1 rnd even. Rep Double Dec Rnd on next rnd, then [every other rnd] 0 (0, 1, 1, 2) more time(s)—63 (69, 71, 77, 79) sts.
