Pattern Notes

Garment is worked as triangular and trapezoidal pieces, with some of them cast on separately and some started by picking up stitches from a previous piece. The working order is important for the flow of the ombré color changes.

This shrug is constructed a bit like a jigsaw puzzle, but the dimensions of the pieces don’t need to be exact. There is some leeway based on the garment structure, blocking and the elastic nature of knitted fabric. Block pieces larger or smaller, as desired.

When shaping in Lace pattern, if you can’t work both the yarn over and its accompanying decrease, work in stockinette stitch instead.

Work shaping decreases as follows: K1, ssk at beginning of right-side rows and p1, p2tog at beginning of wrong-side rows.

When binding off stitches, avoid stair-steps by slipping the first stitch of the bind-off.

For larger sizes where 3 balls are used, start with your favorite end/color of the skein because you will use more of that color. Or start with the color that you prefer less so that you have more leftovers of your favorite color to use for a hat or gloves.

Think ahead about what color(s) you want to use for the crochet edging and wind off some of that color as you go. If your colorway is high contrast, you may want to pick 2 or 3 colors that will look good along the edges of the various parts (especially the sleeves). For the shrug in the photo, 1 sleeve seam and cuff were worked in teal and the rest were worked in gray.

Finishing

Block all pieces to desired measurements.

Sew right front and back sleeve pieces tog by seaming S1 and S3 along long (cast-on) edges, mirroring pieces across the seam.

Sew left front and back sleeve pieces tog by seaming S2 and S4 along long (cast-on) edges, mirroring pieces across the seam.

Sew each sleeve to appropriate front and back edges. The colors should help guide you in getting each sleeve in the correct position.

Sew shoulder gussets in place between front and back pieces, with narrow tip of triangle at tip of shoulder.

Do not sew lower front and back edges together below armholes; leave the flaps open. Edgings Note: If not familiar with single crochet st (sc), refer to Crochet Class on page 81. With RS facing and using crochet hook, starting at the inner corner of the cuff on 1 sleeve, work sc around the cuff. Then with WS held tog and with RS facing, join underarm seam by working sc through both pieces of fabric. Rep for other sleeve. Work sc around all other edges of garment.

Sew button to point of right front. Sew male snap piece to WS of fabric under button.

Check fit to see exactly how much overlap you want in front, then sew female snap piece to left front where desired. Weave in ends. Block again.
