Rep Rows 1–14 for pat. Small Leaf Edging (multiple of 12 sts) Note: Ssk at end of RS rows uses 1 st from the edging tog with 1 live st from the poncho body. Row 1 (RS): Yo, k1, yo, k2, [k2tog] twice, k2, yo, k2tog, ssk (joining last st with next live poncho st). Rows 2, 4 and 6: Sl 1 wyib, p11. Row 3: Yo, k3, yo, k1, [k2tog] twice, k1, yo, k2tog, ssk. The poncho is worked in 1 piece, starting at the bottom of the front, going over the shoulders and then going down to the bottom of the back.
Circular needle is used to accommodate the large number of stitches. Do not join. Slip first stitch of every row. The Small Leaf Edging is added on by working the last stitch of the edging together with a live stitch from the poncho.
Note: At the beg of pat Rows 13 and 14, work 2 short rows in the garter st edging as follows: Sl 1, k9; turn, k10, turn; k10, then continue in pat as established, rep this short-row set on each 13th and 14th row. This will help compensate for the difference in the row gauge between the garter edge and the Lace pat. Front Using larger circular needle, crochet hook, waste yarn and using crochet caston (see page 81), provisionally cast on 200 (210, 220) sts. Pm after the first 10 sts and before the last 10 sts to indicate garter st side edges.
With working yarn, work garter st on first and last 10 sts and Lace pat on the center 180 (190, 200) sts until piece measures 25 (25, 27) inches, ending with Row 14 of Lace pat. Shape Neck Division row (RS): Work 80 (85, 85) sts in established pat; join 2nd ball of yarn and bind off 40 (40, 50) sts; work to end in established pat.
Working both sides at once with separate balls of yarn, dec 1 at each neck edge on next 9 RS rows— 71 (76, 76) sts each shoulder.
Place removable st markers at each end of row to indicate shoulder.
Work 8 rows even (2 reps of Lace have been completed from Division row). Back Work 71 (76, 76) sts in pat; using cable caston (see page 79), cast on 58 (58, 68) sts; work in pat to end—200 (210, 220) sts.
Working cast-on sts into established Lace pat, work even until back is same length as front, ending with Row 14 of Lace pat. Do not bind off. Cut yarn.
Back Edging Using dpn, cast on 12 sts.
With RS of back bottom edge facing, work Small Leaf Edging pat (see note about attaching edging).
Continue working Small Leaf Edging pat until all sts at the bottom edge are used.
Fasten off. Front Edging Carefully remove the provisional cast-on and place live sts on larger circular needle.
Work as for back edging.
Neckband With RS facing and using smaller circular needle, pick up and knit 130 (130, 140) sts around neck opening. Work 8 rnds in 1x1 rib. Bind off all sts loosely in pat. Underarm Ties Make 4. Using dpns, make 4-st I-Cords (see page 80), each 16 inches long.
Sew I-Cords to sides of poncho, 15 inches down from shoulder marker.
Block to finished measurements.
Weave in ends.
