GAUGE

7 sc or hdc = 21/4 inches; 1 row sc and 2 rows hdc = 1 inch; 3 shells = 21/4 inches; 8 rows shells = 2 inches Take time to check gauge.

PATTERN NOTES

Weave in loose ends as work progresses. Chain-2 at beginning of row counts as first half double crochet unless otherwise stated. Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated.

SPECIAL STITCHES

Shell: (Sc, ch 1, sc) in indicated st or sp. Single crochet join (sc join): Place slip knot on hook, insert hook in indicated st, yo and pull up a lp, yo and draw through both lps on hook.

Ch 60 [64, 68]. Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook (beg 2 sk chs count as hdc), hdc in next ch, *2 hdc in next ch, hdc in each of next 3 chs; rep from * across, turn. (73 [78, 83] hdc) Row 2: Ch 1, working in back lps (see Stitch Guide) only, sc in each st across, turn. Row 3: Ch 2 (see Pattern Notes), hdc in each st across, turn.

Row 4: Ch 2, hdc in each of next 2 sts, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in each of next 4 sts; rep from * across, turn. (87 [93, 99] hdc) Row 5: Ch 1, working in front lps (see Stitch Guide) only, sc in each st across, turn. Row 6: Rep row 3. BUTTON BAND

Row 1: With RS facing, working in row ends of left edge, work sc join

(see Special Stitches) in row 1 of yoke, sc in each row of yoke, sc in first row of body, [ch 1, sk next row, sc in next row] across body to bottom corner, turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first st, shell in each ch-1 sp across to yoke section, [sk next sc, shell in next sc] across to last sc of yoke, sc in last st, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first st, *shell in ch-1 sp of next shell; rep from * across, sc in last st, turn. Fasten off.

BUTTONHOLE BAND

Row 1: With RS facing, working in row ends of right edge, join yarn with sc in last row of body, [ch 1, sk next row, sc in next row] up to yoke, sc in each row of yoke, turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first st, [shell in next st, sk next st] 6 times, shell in each ch-1 sp across to last st, sc in last st, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first st, [shell in ch-1 sp of next shell] 13 [15, 7] times, [(sc, ch 3, sc) in ch-1 sp of next shell, shell in ch-1 sp of next shell] 2 times, (sc, ch 3, sc) in ch-1 sp of next shell, sc in last st, do not turn or fasten off.
