different colors • Polyester fiberfill • 1/2-inch (12mm) buttons: 2 • Sewing needle and thread to

match buttons GAUGE Gauge is not important for this project.

PATTERN NOTES

Weave in loose ends as work progresses. Chain-1 at midpoint of round counts as single crochet unless otherwise stated. Work in continuous rounds; do not join unless otherwise stated. Place stitch marker where indicated and move up as each round is completed. Use different colors to distinguis­h beginning from midpoint of each round. Chain-1 at beginning of round counts as first single crochet unless otherwise stated. Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated. Toy is intended to be somewhat flat rather than round; lightly stuff with fiberfill as work progresses to create a pillow effect. For ease and to secure loose ends, sew Nose, Eyes and Tail to Head and Body as work progresses. Do not close open end of any piece unless otherwise stated.

SPECIAL STITCH Single crochet join (sc join):

Place a slip knot on hook, insert hook in indicated st, yo and draw up a lp, yo and pull through both lps on hook.

TOY

NOSE

Rnd 1: With black, ch 4, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across, ch 1 (see Pattern Notes), place marker (see Pattern Notes), working in opposite side

of foundation ch, sc in each ch across. Do not join (see Pattern Notes). (7 sc) Rnd 2: Ch 1 (see Pattern Notes), place marker, 2 sc in first st, sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, sc in next marked st, 2 sc in next st, sc in next st, 2 sc in last st. (12 sc)

Rnds 3 & 4: *Sc in next marked st, 2 sc in next st, sc in each st around to last st before next marked st, 2 sc in next st. Rep from * around. (20 sc at end of rnd 4)

Rnds 5 & 6: Sc in each st around.

Rnds 7 & 8: *Sc in next marked st, sc dec (see Stitch Guide) in next 2 sts, sc in each st around to last 2 sts before next marked st, sc dec in next 2 sts. Rep from * to end of rnd. At end of last rnd, join (see Pattern Notes) in marked st. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. (12 sc at end of rnd 8) Lightly stuff (see Pattern Notes) with fiberfill and shape Nose as desired.

HEAD

Rnd 1: With bone, ch 9, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, ch 1, place marker, working in opposite side of foundation ch, sc in each ch across to last ch, 2 sc in last ch. (18 sc)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, place marker, 2 sc in next st, sc in each st around to last st before marked st, 2 sc in next st, sc in next marked st, 2 sc in next st, sc in each st around to last st before marked st, 2 sc in last st. (23 sc)

Rnds 3 & 4: *Sc in next marked st, 2 sc in next st, sc in each st around to last st before marked st, 2 sc in next st. Rep from * around. (31 sc at end of rnd 4)

Rnd 5: Sc in each st around. Rep rnd 5 until piece measures at least 21/2 inches from beg. Remove lp from hook and place on marker to prevent unraveling. Center Nose 1/2 inch from beg of Head. With tapestry needle, sew securely (see Pattern Notes) to Head, knotting and leaving trimmed tails inside Head. Replace lp on hook, rep rnd 5 until Head measures 3 inches from beg. Lightly stuff with fiberfill here and as work progresses. With black and tapestry needle, and referring to photo as a guide, sew 2 straight lines for eyes, each about 1 inch in length and 1/4 inch apart, on Head. Knot loose ends tog on inside of Head, leave trimmed tails inside Head. Replace lp on hook, rep rnd 5 until Head measures 4 inches from beg.

Next rnd: *Sc in next marked st, sc dec in next 2 sts, sc around to last 2 sts before next marked st, sc dec in next 2 sts. Rep from * around. (27 sc) Last rnd: Rep last rnd, join in marked st. Fasten off. (23 sc)

TAIL

Rnd 1: With bone, make a slip ring (see illustrati­on). Ch 1, 4 sc in ring, place marker in first sc. Pull tail to close ring. (4 sc) Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around. (8 sc) Rnds 3–6: Sc in each st around. Rnd 7: *Sc in next 2 sts, sc dec in next 2 sts. Rep from * around. (6 sc)

Rnds 8 & 9: Sc in each st around; at end of last rnd, join in beg sc. Fasten off, leaving a 6-inch tail for sewing.

BODY

Rnd 1: With red, ch 15, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, ch 1, place marker, working in opposite side of foundation ch, sc in each ch across to last ch, 2 sc in last ch. (29 sc)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, place marker, 2 sc in next st, sc in each st around to last st before marked st, 2 sc in next st, sc in next marked st, 2 sc in next st, sc in each st around to last st before marked st, 2 sc in last st. (34 sc)

Rnds 3–6: *Sc in next marked st, 2 sc in next st, sc in each st around to last st before marked st, 2 sc in next st. Rep from * around. (50 sc at end of rnd 6) Lightly stuff with fiberfill here and as work progresses.

Rnds 7–11: Sc in each st around. Rnd 12: Sc in next 3 sts, bpsc (see Stitch Guide) in next 20 sts, sc in each rem st around. Rnds 13–16: Sc in each st around. Remove lp from hook and place on marker.

Center Tail 1/4 inch above bpsc ridge and sew securely to Body, knotting and leaving trimmed tails on inside of Body. Replace lp on hook, rep last rnd until Body measures 7 inches from beg. Next rnd: *Sc in next marked st, sc dec in next 2 sts, sc around to last 2 sts before next marked st, sc dec in next 2 sts. Rep from * around. (46 sc)

Last rnd: Sc in next marked st, sc dec in next 2 sts, sc around to last 2 sts before next marked st, sc dec in next 2 sts, leave rem sts unworked, join in next marked st. Fasten off, leaving a 10-inch tail for sewing. (21 sc)

PAW & LEG

Make 4.

Paw

Rnd 1: With bone, ch 6, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, ch 1, place marker, working in opposite side of foundation ch, sc in each ch across to last ch, 2 sc in last ch. (12 sc)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, place marker, 2 sc in next st, sc in each st around to last st before marked st, 2 sc in next st, sc in next marked st, 2 sc in next st, sc in each st around to last st before marked st, 2 sc in last st. (17 sc)

Rnds 3–6: Sc in each st around. Rnd 7: Sc in next marked st, sc dec in next 2 sts, sc in next 4 sc, sc dec in next 2 sts, sc in each rem st around. (15 sc)

Rnd 8: Sc in next 3 sts, leave rem sts unworked, join in next st. Fasten off and weave in end. Note: This side is the underside of the paw. With black and tapestry needle, and leaving a long tail, embroider 3 straight stitches (see illustrati­on on this page and photo on page 7) for “claws” on top side, working from WS out from beg rnds. Without pulling too tightly, securely knot tails inside Paw. Lightly stuff with fiberfill here and as work progresses.

Leg

Rnd 9: With RS facing, sc join

(see Special Stitch) red in first unworked st, reposition marker on this st for first st of rnd, sc in each st around, join in beg sc. (15 sc) Rnd 10: Ch 1, bpsc in each st around. Rnd 11: Sc in next 2 sts, sc dec in next 2 sts, sc in next 5 sts, sc dec in next 2 sts, sc to beg of rnd. (13 sc) Rnd 12: Sc in each st around. Rep rnd 12 until piece measures 41/2 inches from beg, at end of last rnd, join in beg sc. Fasten off, leaving an 8-inch tail for sewing. Lightly stuff, shaping Paw as desired and keeping Leg somewhat flat.

EAR

Make 2. Row 1 (RS): With black, ch 9, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (8 sc) Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sk first sc, sc in each rem st across. (7 sc) Rows 4 & 5: Rep row 2. Rows 6 & 7: Rep row 3. (5 sc at end of row 7) Rows 8 & 9: Rep rows 2 and 3. (4 sc)

Row 10: Ch 1, turn, sc dec in first 2 sts, sc in next 2 sts. (3 sc)

Row 11: Ch 1, turn, sc dec in first 2 sts, sc in last st. (2 sc)

Row 12: Ch 1, turn, sc dec in 2 sts. Fasten off.

Edging rnd: With RS of row 1 facing, sc join black in end of row 1, working up first side, sc in end of each rem row, 3 sc in st of row 12, working down other side, sc in end of each row, working in opposite side of foundation ch, sc in each ch across, join in beg sc. Fasten off, leaving a 7-inch tail for sewing. (35 sc)

ASSEMBLY

Refer to photo as a guide.

Ears

Position Ears at a slight angle at open end of Head, placing 1/2 inch apart at center front and 1 inch apart at center back of Head. Sew evenly to top sts of Head, leaving bottom of Ears unsewn.

Body & Head

Adjust fiberfill in Body and Head, adding more for a firm neck or removing some for a floppy neck. Position Head and Body with Nose and Tail facing up. With red, sew Head and Body tog.

Buttons

Position buttons below bpsc ridge about 3 inches apart and 11/4 inches from each side. With sewing needle and thread, sew securely in place.

Collar

With red, ch 21, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Position around neck and sew in place to cover seam.
