size needed to obtain gauge • Yarn needle • 14-inch-diameter metal ring • 12 twist ties • Pinning board • Straight pins

Rnds 1 and 2 = 4 inches in diameter
PATTERN NOTES
Weave in loose ends as work progresses. Use proper gauge. If project is slightly larger, use a smaller hook so the doily can be stretched to fit the ring. If the doily is too big, it will droop over time. Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated. Chain-6 at beginning of round counts as first treble crochet and chain-2 unless otherwise stated. Chain-2 at beginning of round counts as first half double crochet unless otherwise stated.

Rnd 8: Join blue in any ch-3 sp, beg shell in same ch-3 sp, [ch 6, sc in next sc, ch 6, shell in next ch-3 sp] 11 times, ch 6, sc in next sc, ch 6, join in 4th ch of beg ch-4.
Rnd 9: Sl st in next ch-3 sp, ch 1, (sc, ch 3, sc) in same ch-3 sp, [ch 7, sc in next sc, ch 7, (sc, ch 3, sc) in next ch-3 sp] 11 times, ch 7, sc in next sc, ch 7, join in beg sc. Do not fasten off, draw up a lp, remove hook. Steam-block, pinning outer ch-3 sps of points so crocheted piece is stretched slightly. Make sure all pinned points are evenly sp around and let dry overnight.
Note: Before starting rnd 10, use twist ties to temporarily secure each ch-3 sp of rnd 9 to metal ring. As rnd progresses, remove each twist tie just before working in that ch-3 sp.
Rnd 10: Work sc around ring
(see illustration) and in ch-3 sps of rnd 9, [2 sc in next ch-3 sp and around ring, 25 sc around ring only] around until ring is completely covered and all 12 points of rnd 9 of piece are attached to ring, join in beg sc. Fasten off.
