size needed to obtain gauge • Tapestry needle • 22mm black shank buttons: 2

FRONT BODY

Row 1 (RS): Beg at bottom of Front Body, with natural, ch 10, 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, [sk 1 ch, 2 sc in next ch] 4 times, turn. (10 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in first sc, [sk 1 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 4 times, 2 sc in last sc, change color

(see Stitch Guide) to black, fasten off natural, turn. (12 sc)

Row 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in first sc, [sk next sc, 2 sc in next sc]

across to last sc, 2 sc in last sc, turn. (14 sc)

Rows 4–6: Rep row 3. At the end of row 6, change color to yellow, fasten off black. (20 sc)

Shoulder Strap

[Ch 1, sc in each of next 3 sc, turn] to desired length of Shoulder Strap. At the end of last row, change color to yellow.

2nd Side

Rows 34–37: Rep row 2. At the end of last rep, change color to black.

Rows 38 & 39: Rep row 2. At the end of last rep, change color to yellow.

Rows 40–43: Rep row 2. At the end of last rep, change color to black.

Rows 44 & 45: Rep row 2. At the end of last rep, change color to yellow.

Rows 46–49: Rep row 2. At the end of last rep, change color to black.

Rows 50–53: Rep row 2. At the end of last rep, with care that Gusset and Shoulder Strap are not twisted, with WS facing, working through both thicknesse­s of row 53 and opposite side of foundation ch of row 1, sl st in each st across. Fasten off.

ANTENNAE

Make 2.

Row 1: With black, ch 13, [yo, insert hook in 4th ch from hook, yo, draw up a lp, yo, draw through 2 lps on hook] 3 times, yo, draw through all 4 lps on hook, sl st in each of next 9 chs, leaving 8-inch length of yarn, fasten off.

LARGE UPPER WING

Make 2.

With natural, ch 10, 3 dc in 4th ch from hook (3 sk chs count as

first dc), dc in each of next 2 chs, hdc in next ch, sc in each of next 2 chs, sl st in last ch, working on opposite side of foundation ch, sc in each of next 2 chs, hdc in next ch, dc in each of next 2 chs, 4 dc in same ch as beg dc sts, join

SMALL LOWER WING

Make 2.

With natural, ch 8, 2 hdc in 3rd ch from hook (2 sk chs count as

first hdc), hdc in next ch, sc in each of next 3 chs, sl st in last ch, working on opposite side of foundation ch, sc in each of next 3 chs, hdc in next ch, 3 hdc in same ch as beg dc sts, join in 2nd ch of beg hdc. Fasten off.

ASSEMBLY

With RS tog, matching colors,

whipstitch edges (see illustra

tion) of Gusset to Front Body. Matching sts of Back Body to opposite edge of Gusset, whipstitch edges tog. Sew Antennae centered to top of row 31 of Purse, just in front of rem free lps of row 31. Sew buttons for eyes centered over rows 24 and 25 of Front Body in line with buttonhole­s. Sew Wings to Gusset on each side of Body centered over center strip of yellow.
