and #313 Aran • Sizes F/5/3.75mm, H/8/5mm and I/9/5.5mm crochet hooks or size needed to obtain gauge • Tapestry needle • Fiberfill • Stitch marker
GAUGE
Size I hook: 3 sc = 1 inch; 3 sc rnds = 1 inch

RHINO
BODY
Rnd 1: With buff, ch 48, join

EAR
Make 2.
Inner Ear
Row 1: With pink, ch 2, sc in 2nd ch from hook, turn. (1 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in next sc,
turn. (2 sc)
Rows 3 & 4: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.
Row 5: Ch 1, sc in each sc across. Fasten off.
Ear Back
Rep rows 1–5 of Inner Ear with buff. At the end of row 5, do not
fasten off. Place Inner Ear and Ear Back tog, with Inner Ear facing. Working through both thicknesses, work 2 sc in each of next 2 sts, sc up side of Ear, 3 sc in opposite side of foundation ch, sc down other side of Ear, join in first st, leaving a length of yarn, fasten off. Tack first and 4th sts tog to gather bottom of Ear. Run needle up center of Ear Back to tip of Ear, turn needle and reinsert needle back into Ear (in another sp next to the one needle exited through) and run back down through Ear. Pull strand slightly to pull Ear Back into a slight arch shape. Sew Ears to top of Head with Inner Ear facing outwards to the sides of Head.
LARGE HORN
Rnd 1: With Aran, ch 4, 4 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Rnd 2: Sc in each sc around. Rnd 3: [Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] twice. (6 sc) Rnd 4: Rep rnd 2. Rnd 5: [Sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc] twice. (8 sc)
Rnds 6 & 7: Rep rnd 2. Rnd 8: [Sc in each of next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc] twice, leaving a 12-inch length of yarn, fasten off. (10 sc)
SMALL HORN
Rnds 1–4: Rep rnds 1–4 of Large Horn. Stuff Horns, sew to Head, sewing Large Horn at the top end of Muzzle, and the Small Horn
1/4 inch above Large Horn. Bend Large Horn slightly so it is curved towards Small Horn.
LEG
Make 4.
Rnd 1: With pink, ch 3, join to form a ring, ch 1, 2 sc in each ch around. (6 sc)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around.
(12 sc) Rnd 3: Rep rnd 2. (24 sc) Rnd 4: Sc in each sc around, draw up a lp of buff, fasten off pink. Rnd 5: Working in back lps
(see Stitch Guide) only, sc in

Rnds 6–9: Sc in each sc around. At the end of rnd 9, leaving a 12-inch length of yarn, fasten off. Stuff Legs with fiberfill and sew to Body as indicated on Placement Diagram.
TAIL
Leaving a 4-inch length of buff at beg, ch 8, working in back
bar of ch (see illustration), sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in back bar of each rem ch, leaving a length of yarn, fasten off. With beg rem length, attach Tail to end of Body centering between back Legs. Cut 4 strands of pink each 3 inches long. Holding strands tog, knot on end sp of Tail. Trim ends.
EYE
Make 2. With tapestry needle and black, embroider 5 or 6 vertical
straight stitches (see illustra
tion) for each eye, placing Eyes just above muzzle.
NOSTRIL
Make 2. With tapestry needle and black, embroider 2 sts straight stitches for each nostril, placing Nostrils on front of muzzle of Head just below Large Horn.
PANDA
BODY
Rnd 1: With white, ch 36, join (see Pattern Notes) to form a ring, ch 1, sc in each ch around. (36 sc)

Rnd 4: Sc in each sc around, leaving a 12-inch length, fasten off. Stuff with fiberfill, position Muzzle on lower half of Head with the hdc sts of rnd 2 at each side of the Muzzle.
EAR
Make 2.
Rnd 1: With size H hook and black, ch 3, join in first ch, ch 1, 2 sc in each ch around. (6 sc)
Rnd 2: [Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] around. (12 sc)
Rnd 3: [Sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc] around. (18 sc)
Row 4: Now working in rows, with WS tog, fold Ear in half, working through both thicknesses, sc around curved edge of 9 sc only, leaving a 6-inch length, fasten off. Sew straight edge of Ear to Head with 1-inch sp between Ears.
FRONT LEG
Make 2. Rnd 1: With size H hook and black, ch 3, join in first ch, ch 1, 2 sc in each ch around. (6 sc)

Rnds 5–11: Sc in each sc around. At the end of rnd 11, leaving 12-inch length, fasten off. Stuff Back Legs with fiberfill, sew to Body as indicated on Diagram.
TAIL

Row 3: Ch 1, sc dec in next 2 sc, sc in next sc, turn. (2 sc)
Rnd 4: Now working in rnds, ch 1, sc in each of next 2 sc, sc around Eye Patch, working in side edge of rows, sc in each of rem 7 chs of foundation ch, sc in side edge of rows, join in beg sc, leaving 12-inch length of yarn, fasten off. (15 sc) Using photo as a guide, sew Eye Patches to front of Head with opening at top, sewing on a slant to Head.
FACIAL FEATURES
Pupil
Make 2. With black and tapestry needle, embroider 3 small straight
stitches (see illustration) 1/4 inch in length in center opening of Eye Patch.
Nose
With black and tapestry needle, embroider several vertical straight stitches 1/2 inch in length on top of Muzzle in a triangle shape. Do not fasten off.
Mouth
Embroider 1 vertical straight stitch centered below Nose
1/2 inch in length and 2 straight stitches to form smiling mouth.
