Diagonal Blocks Table Mats

PATTERN NOTES

Mat is worked in rows on the diagonal; refer to written pattern and Placement Diagrams. Use colors in Color Chart or 1 ounce each of any 13 colors. Change colors in any random order unless otherwise stated. Weave in loose ends as work progresses. Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated. Refer to Diagonal Row 2 for Squares 1 and 2, Diagonal Row 3 for Square 3 and Diagonal Row 10 for Square 4.

SPECIAL STITCHES

Pattern stitch (pattern st):

Ch 1, sc in first sc, [ch 1, sk next ch-1 sp, sc in next sc] twice.

Single crochet join (sc join):

Place slip knot on hook, insert hook in indicated st, yo and draw up a lp, yo and pull through both lps on hook.

Small shell (sm shell): 5 dc in

indicated st.

Large shell (lg shell): 7 dc in indicated st.

Picot: (Sl st, ch 3, sl st) in indicted st.

MAT Make 1 in each color sequence.

DIAGONAL ROW 1

Foundation Square

Row 1 (RS): With first color

(see Pattern Notes), ch 6, sc in 2nd ch from hook, [ch 1, sk next ch, sc in next ch] twice, turn.

(3 sc, 2 ch-1 sps)

Rows 2–5: [Work pattern st

(see Special Stitches), turn] 4 times. At end of last row, fasten off. (1 Square)

Note: When instructed to join in Square previously made, you will be joining in Foundation Square or a Square 1. Row 1 (RS): With RS facing,

join (see Pattern Notes) next color to first ch of row 1 of Square previously made, ch 7, sc in 2nd ch from hook, [ch 1, sk next ch, sc in next ch] twice, sk last ch (does not count as ch-1
