size needed to obtain gauge • Tapestry needle • Spray starch • Stitch markers
GAUGE
6 fan sts = 4 inches; 5 fan st rows = 41/2 inches
PATTERN NOTES
Weave in loose ends as work progresses unless otherwise noted. Before seaming sleeves, dryblock the finished rectangle with spray starch and a warm iron. Join with slip stitch unless otherwise stated. Chain-3 at beginning of row does not count as a stitch unless otherwise stated.
SPECIAL STITCH
Fan stitch (Fan st): Cast on 8 lps (see photo tutorial article
on pages 34 and 35), insert the hook into the designated ch or st, yo and bring up a lp, yo, holding the cast on lps by the twists at the bottom, draw the yarn through all lps on hook, ch 1 to close.
SHRUG
Leaving a 12- to 15-inch-long tail for sleeve joining, ch 32 [34, 36, 38, 40, 42].
Row 1: 1 hdc in 2nd ch from hook (sk ch does not count as st) and each ch across, turn. (31 [33, 35, 37, 39, 41] hdc) Row 2: Ch 3 (see Pattern Notes), fan st (see Special Stitch) in first hdc, *ch 2, sk next hdc, fan st in next hdc; rep from * across, turn. (16 [17, 18, 19, 20, 21] fan sts, 15 [16, 17, 18, 19, 20] ch-2 sps)
Rows 3–38 [3–40, 3–42, 3–44,
3–46, 3–46]: Ch 3, sk first fan st, fan st in next ch-2 sp, *ch 2, sk next fan st, fan st in next ch-2 sp; rep from * across, ch 2, sk last fan st, fan st in top of beg ch-3, turn. Row 39 [41, 43, 45, 47, 47]: Ch 1, sc in each st and ch sp across, sk beg ch-3, turn. (31 [33, 35, 37, 39, 41] sts) Row 40 [42, 44, 46, 48, 48]: Ch 1, hdc in each sc, fasten off.
SLEEVES
Block (see Pattern Notes) rectangle. Fold lengthwise and seam, in favorite seaming method, through the first and last 8 [8,8, 9, 9, 9] fan rows on each end to form sleeves, leaving center open for Bodice and Collar. Fasten off.
BODICE & COLLAR
Place markers in 2 seamed fan sts at each underarm seam. Rnd 1 (RS): Right side facing,
join (see Pattern Notes) yarn in left marked st of any pair of marked sts, ch 1, 2 hdc in marked st, *work 42 [46, 50, 56, 61, 68] hdc evenly across row edges to next marker*, 2 hdc in each of next 2 marked sts, rep between *, 2 hdc in last marked st, do not join. (92 [100, 108, 120, 130, 144] hdc) Rnd 2: Ch 3, fan st in first hdc, *ch 3, sk next hdc, fan st in next hdc; rep from * around, sk last hdc, do not join. (46 [50, 54, 60, 65, 72] fans, 46 [50, 54, 60, 65, 72] ch-3 sps) Rnds 3–6 [3–7, 3–7, 3–8, 3–8, 3–9]: Ch 3, fan st in ch sp at beg of last rnd, *ch 3, fan st in next ch-3 sp; rep from * around, do not join. At end of final rnd, ch 3, join in closing lp of first fan.
Rnd 7 [8,8, 9, 9, 10]: Ch 3 (counts as first hdc and ch 1), (hdc, ch 1, hdc) in next ch-3 sp, *ch 1, hdc in closing lp of next fan st, ch 1, (hdc, ch 1, hdc) in next ch-3 sp; rep from * around, ch 1, join in 2nd ch of beg ch-3. (138 [150, 162, 180, 195, 216] ch-1 sps)
Rnd 8 [9, 9, 10, 10, 11]: Ch 1, 2 hdc in each of next 2 ch-1 sps; *sl st in next ch-1 sp, 2 hdc in each of next 2 ch-1 sps; rep from * around, join in last ch-1 sp, fasten off. (184 [200, 216, 240, 260, 288] hdc)
Cuff Edging
Join yarn in seam at cuff.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, *2 hdc in each of next 2 sts, sl st in next st; rep from * around, 2 hdc in next 1 [0,2, 1, 0, 2] st(s), join in first st. Fasten off. (122 [132, 136, 146, 156, 160] hdc) Rep for other cuff. Lightly block if needed.
