FINISHED MEASUREMEN­TS

14 inches tall x 22 inches long

MATERIALS

• Universal Yarn Uptown Worsted medium (worsted) weight acrylic yarn (31/2 oz/180 yds/100g per skein): 5 skeins #337 neon yellow 1 skein each #314 lime, #331 sapphire, #339 purple panic and #347 orange

• Size G/6/4mm crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge

• Tapestry needle

• Locking stitch markers

• Polyester fiberfill

GAUGE

9 sc = 2 inches; 6 sc rows = 1 inch

PATTERN NOTES

Weave in loose ends as work progresses. Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated. Before joining Spikes, Tail and Legs to Body, insert blunt end of tapestry needle under back horizontal bar of single crochet stitches of Body to slightly stretch and enlarge for easier insertion of hook.

SPECIAL TECHNIQUES

Attachment technique: With WS facing, hold indicated piece where specified or desired to Body with RS tog, working through both layers [insert hook into next ch-1 sp or st of top layer and in back horizontal bar of correspond­ing st on Body, yo, pull up a lp and draw through lp on hook] as many times as necessary to attach.

Fasten off attachment:

Fasten off leaving a long tail, thread tail on tapestry needle and use to sew top of last row to back of Body to secure.

DINOSAUR BODY

Make 2.

Row 1 (WS): Beg at bottom edge with yellow, ch 69, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (68 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st, turn. (70 sc) Row 3: Rep row 2. (72 sc)

Rows 4–47: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. Place marker in first st of row 29. Row 48: Ch 1, sc dec (see Stitch Guide) in next 2 sts, sc in each st across to last 2 sts, sc dec in last 2 sts, turn. (70 sc)

Row 49: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. Rows 50–53: Rep rows 48 and 49 alternatel­y twice. (66 sc)

Rows 54–60: Rep row 48, do not turn at end of last row.

(52 sc) Place marker in 35th st of row 60. Neck edging row: Working along left side edge in ends of rows, work 29 sc evenly sp to next marker, reposition marker to last sc made for neck bottom edge. Fasten off.

HEAD

Row 1 (RS): Beg at bottom with orange, ch 15, 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across to last ch, 2 sc in last ch, turn. (16 sc)

Rows 2–8: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in each st across to last st, 2 sc in last st, turn. (30 sc)

Row 9: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. Row 10: Rep row 2. (32 sc)

Rows 11–14: Rep rows 9 and 10 alternatel­y twice. (36 sc)

Rows 15–32: Rep row 9. Place marker in last st of row 15.

Row 33: Ch 1, sc dec in next 2 sts, sc in each st across to last 2 sts, sc dec in last 2 sts, turn. (34 sc) Row 34: Rep row 9. Rows 35–38: Rep rows 33 and 34 alternatel­y twice. (30 sc) Rows 39–44: Rep row 33. Do not fasten off. (18 sc)

Head Assembly

A. Place Head RS up on Body, matching markers at left side edges and matching first st of Head to marked 35th st at top of Body,

B. working through both layers by inserting hook into both lps of Head sts and front lp only of Body top sts, sc dec in first 2 sts, sc in each of next 14 sts, sc dec in next 2 sts,

C. work 29 sc evenly sp in ends of rows of Head and front lp only of next 29 sts at Body side edge to next marker on Body (neck bottom edge) and row 15 of Head,

D. working rem sts through Head only, sc evenly sp in ends of rows to foundation ch of Head, sc in opposite side of each foundation ch across, sc evenly sp in ends of rows along right side edge of Head to top of Head, join with sl st in first st of rnd. Fasten off orange leaving a long tail.

E. Thread yarn tail through tapestry needle and use to sew rem of Head outer edge to Body, lightly stuffing before finishing.

SPOTS

X–Large Make 1 each purple, orange & lime. Rnd 1: Make a slip ring (see illustrati­on), 8 sc in ring, join (see Pattern Notes) in first st. (8 sc)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around, join. (16 sc)

Rnd 3: Ch 1, (2 sc in next st, sc in next st) around, join. (24 sc)

Rnd 4: Ch 1, (2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 2 sts) around, join. (32 sc) Rnd 5: Ch 1, (2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 3 sts) around, join and fasten off leaving a long tail. (40 sc)

Large

Make 5 purple, 3 orange & 2 lime.

Rnds 1–4: Rep rnds 1–4 of X–Large spot. Fasten off leaving a long tail. (32 sc)

Medium

Make 3 sapphire & 2 lime.

Rnds 1 & 2: Rep rnds 1 and 2 of X–Large spot. Fasten off leaving a long tail. (16 sc)

Small

Make 6 sapphire.

Rnd 1: Rep rnd 1 of X–Large spot. Fasten off leaving a long tail. (8 sc)

Body Assembly

A. Use yarn tails to sew 2 small sapphire Spots for eyes and 2 medium lime Spots for nostrils to Head where desired and rem of Spots to both sides of Body where desired.

Note: Be sure to reverse position of 2nd Body piece so neck edging row is at right side edge of Body before sewing Spots.

B. Holding Body pieces with WS tog, join yellow to marked sts at top edges in unworked back lp of Body front and both lps of 2nd Body,

C. working through both layers, ch 1, sc in same st as join, sc in each st in same manner to next marker at neck bottom,

D. sc evenly sp through both layers in ends of rows to bottom edge of Body,

E. working in opposite side of foundation ch, 2 sc in first ch, sc in each ch across to last ch, 2 sc in last ch,

F. sc evenly sp in ends of rows along right side edge of Body,

G. sc in each rem unworked st across top edge, joining to first sc of rnd, inserting fiberfill to desired thickness before finishing. Fasten off.

LEGS

Make 4. Row 1 (RS): With yellow, ch 15, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (14 sc) Rows 2–10: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.

Leg Assembly

Fold Leg in half with WS tog, matching first and last st of row 10, ch 1, work 1 sc through both layers in each of next 7 sts, ch 1, work 10 sc evenly sp through both layers at folded bottom edge to next corner, ch 1, working in opposite side of foundation ch, sc in each of next 7 chs, ch 1, work 10 sc evenly sp in ends of rows across top of Leg, ch 1, join in first sc of rnd, turn.

Leg Attachment

With RS of Leg held where desired at Body bottom edge and working through both layers, [insert hook into next ch-1 of Leg and into correspond­ing st on Body, yo, pull up a lp and draw through lp on hook], work Attachment Technique (see Special Techniques) through both layers in next 10 sts, rep between [ ] once, fasten off attachment (see Special Techniques).

TAIL

Row 1 (RS): With yellow, ch 57, sc dec in 2nd and 3rd ch from hook, sc in each ch across to last 2 chs, sc dec in last 2 chs, turn. (54 sc) Row 2: Ch 1, sc dec in next 2 sts, sc in each st across to last 2 sts, sc dec in next 2 sts, turn. (52 sc) Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. Rows 4–24: Rep row 2. (10 sc)

Rows 25–28: Rep rows 2 and 3 alternatel­y twice. (6 sc)

Row 29: Ch 1, [sc dec in next 2 sts] 3 times, turn. (3 sc)

Row 30: Do not ch 1, sc dec in next 3 sts, turn. Drop lp from hook and place on st marker. (1 sc) Fold WS of Tail tog and mark fold (bottom edge of Tail). Unfold Tail and sew 1 large spot where desired on each side of Tail between bottom fold and curved upper edges. Place lp back on hook.

Tail Assembly

Refold Tail, do not ch 1, working through both layers, sc evenly sp in ends of rows along top curved edges to end of row 1, working in opposite side of foundation ch, sc in each ch across to create straight edge of Tail, lightly stuff before closing, turn.

Tail Attachment

With RS of Tail straight edge and Body right side edge held tog and having Tail bottom fold 1 or 2 sts above last st at Body bottom, ch 1, work attachment technique to attach sc sts of Tail to Body. Fasten off.

SPIKES

Make 9.

Row 1 (WS): Beg at tip and with 2 strands blue held tog, ch 2, sc in 2nd ch from hook, turn. (1 sc) Row 2: Ch 1, 3 sc in st, turn. (3 sc)

Row 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in next st, 2 sc in last st, turn. (5 sc)

Row 4: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in each of next 3 sts, 2 sc in last st, do not turn. (7 sc)

Edging rnd: Do not ch 1, work 7 sc evenly sp across ends of rows to Spike tip, ch 1, work 7 sc evenly sp in ends of rows to row 4 (bottom edge of Spike), ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in each of next 5 sts, 2 sc in last st, join with sl st in first st of rnd, fasten off 1 strand, turn. (23 sc)

Spike Attachment

With RS tog, place bottom edge of Spike where desired on Body, use attachment technique to join next 9 sc of Tail to Body. Fasten off. Rep above to make and join additional Spikes to Body along upper edges of Body and Tail where desired.
