2-COLOR SQUARE

Make 4 each red/white (B), green/white (C) & red/green (D). Rows 1–23: With first color (see Pattern Notes), work rows 1–23 of White Square, changing to 2nd color (see Pattern Notes) on last st of row 23. (71 dc) Row 24: Working in back lp only, rep row 24 of White Square. Rows 25–46: Rep rows 25–46 of White Square.

2-Color Square Edging

With RS facing, working in ends of rows at left side edge, ch 1, sc in side edge of last dc dec made, *12 sc evenly sp in ends of rows to first pin, 13 sc evenly sp to 2nd pin, 13 sc evenly sp to 3rd pin, 12 sc evenly sp to within next corner, sc in corner, change to next color before completing sc (see Special Stitches), with new color, (ch 1, sc) in same st as last sc, 12 sc evenly sp along next side edge to first pin, 13 sc evenly sp to 2nd pin, 13 sc evenly sp to 3rd pin, 12 sc evenly sp to within next corner**, (sc, ch 1, sc) in corner, rep from * to ** once, (sc, ch 1) in corner, join to first sc of rnd. Fasten off. (208 sc)

ASSEMBLY Step 1: 2-Block Unit #1 Make 4.

With RS facing, arrange 1 white (A) square and 1 red/white (B) square on a flat surface as shown in Figure 1 (see page 58 for all illustrations), use safety pins to evenly match sts. With red slip knot on hook and working yarn under edges to be seamed, beg on right side edge indicated by an X on Figure 1, *insert hook from RS to WS in corner ch-1 sp of B (lower) square, insert hook from RS to WS in corner ch-1 sp of A (upper) square, yo with working yarn, pull through all lps on hook to complete as a sl st**, [insert hook in same manner through back lp of next st of B square and front (next adjacent) lp of A square, yo, complete as a sl st] across to next corner ch-1 sp, rep from * to ** once. Fasten off red.

Step 2: 2-Block Unit #2 Make 4.

With RS facing, arrange 1 green/ white (C) square and 1 green/ red (D) square on flat surface as shown in Figure 2 and use safety pins to evenly match sts. With green slip knot on hook and working yarn under edges to be seamed, beg on right side edge indicated by an X on Figure 2, *insert hook from RS to WS in corner ch-1 sp of D

(lower) square, insert hook from RS to WS in corner ch-1 sp of C (upper) square, yo and pull through all lps on hook to complete as a sl st**, [insert hook through back lp of next st of B square and front (next adjacent) lp of A square, yo, complete as sl st] across to next corner ch-1 sp, rep from * to ** once. Fasten off green.

Step 3: 4-Block Unit Make 4.

With RS facing, arrange 1 each of 2-block units #1 and #2 on a flat surface as shown in Figure 3, use safety pins to evenly match sts and seams. With red slip knot on hook and working yarn under edges to be seamed, beg at right side edge indicated by an X on Figure 4, insert hook from RS to WS in back lp of ch-1 sp of D (lower) square and

front lp of ch-1 sp of B (upper) square, yo and pull through all lps on hook to complete as sl st, continue to evenly work LESS

(see Special Technique) in sts of squares D and B to within center seam, drop red, insert hook in same manner in previously worked ch-1 sp to right of center seam of both units, yo with green and pull through lp on hook to change color, with green work LESS in center seam sl st, LESS in next previously worked ch-1 to left of center seam and in each st across, ending in last ch-1 sp. Fasten off green.

Step 4: 8-Block Unit Make 2.

With RS facing, arrange 2 4-block units on a flat surface as shown in Figure 4, use safety pins to evenly match sts. With red slip knot on hook and work- ing yarn under edges to be seamed, beg at right side edge indicated by an X on Figure 4, insert hook in back lp of ch-1 sp of D square of lower 4-block unit and front lp of ch-1 sp of D square of upper 4-block unit, yo and complete as a sl st, continue to work LESS across D squares to within center seam, drop red, insert hook in same manner in previously worked ch-1 sp to right of center seam of both units, yo with white and pull through lp on hook to change color, with white, work LESS in center seam sl st, LESS in next previously worked ch-1 sp to left of center seam and in each st across squares B and C, ending in last ch-1 sp. Fasten off white.

Step 5: Throw Center Seam

With RS facing, arrange both 8-block units on a flat surface as shown in Figure 5, using safety pins to evenly match sts and seams. With white slip knot on hook and working yarn under edges to be seamed, beg at ch-1 sp of squares C and B on right side edge indicated by an X on Figure 5, work LESS across to within first seam, work LESS in previously worked ch-1 sp to right of seam, drop white, with red [work LESS in seam sl st, work LESS in next previously worked ch-1 sp to left of seam and in each st across D squares to within next seam, work LESS in previously worked ch-1 sp to right of seam] twice, work LESS in center seam sl st, drop red, with white work LESS in next previously worked ch-1 sp to left of seam and in each st across squares B and C, ending in last ch-1 sp. Fasten off white. Block throw to 55 inches square and allow to dry.
