Braided Cable Cowl

PATTERN NOTES

First the Base of the cowl is crocheted with each of the leafshaped lengths and closure pocket added at the end. Chain-2 at beginning of row does not count as stitch unless otherwise stated. Join with slip stitch unless otherwise indicated.

SPECIAL STITCHES

Braided cable right side (BCRS): Sk next 3 sts (at the beg of the row, this means the very first 3 sts), fptr (see Stitch

Guide) around each of next 3 sts; working in front of the post sts just made, fptr around each of the 3 sk sts; fptr around each of the next 3 sts.

Braided cable wrong side

(BCWS): Sk next 3 sts (at the beg of the row, this means the very first 3 sts), bptr (see Stitch

Guide) around each of next 3 sts; working behind the post sts just made, bptr around each of the 3 sts just sk; bptr around each of the next 3 sts. Wattle stitch (WT): (sc, ch 1, dc) in st indicated.

COWL BASE Ch 23.

Row 1: Dc in 3rd ch from hook (sk chs do not count as a st) and in next 8 chs, WT (see Special

Stitches) in next ch, sk next ch, WT in next ch, dc in each of next 9 chs. Turn. (18 dc, 2 WT)

Row 2 (RS): Ch 2 (see Pattern Notes), BCRS (see Special

Stitches) in first 9 sts, WT in next WT ch-1 sp, WT in sp between WT, WT in next WT ch-1 sp, BCRS in next 9 sts; dc in turning ch. Turn. (2 BC, 3 WT, 1 dc) Row 3: Ch 2, sk first dc, BCWS

Row 68: Ch 1, WT in each ch-1 sp across; sl st in turning ch at end of row. Turn. Rows 69–77: Rep row 68. Fasten off.

2nd Half of Pocket

Row 67B: With WS facing and working in unused lps of row 67,

join (see Pattern Notes) yarn to first st of row 66, ch 1, WT in each of unused lps of ch-1; sl st in turning ch at end of row. Turn. (5 WT) Rows 68B–77B: Rep row 68. Row 78: Working through both thicknesse­s of pocket, sc flaps tog by working sc through each dc and sc across, sk all ch-1 sps. Turn. (10 sc)

First Leaf-Shaped End

Row 79: Ch 2, 2 dc in each st across. Turn. (20 dc)

Row 80: Ch 2, BCRS in first 9 sts, WT in between next 2 dc, BCRS in last 9 dc, dc in turning ch. Turn. (2 BC, 1 WT, 1 dc)

Row 81: Ch 2, sk first dc, BCWS in next 9 sts, WT in next WT ch-1 sp, BCWS in next 9 sts, dc in turning ch. Turn.

Row 82: Ch 2, sk first dc, BCRS in next 9 sts, WT in between next 2 dc, BCRS in last 9 dc, dc in turning ch. Turn.

Rows 83–87: Rep rows 81 and 82 alternatel­y twice, then rep row 81 once more.

Row 88: Ch 2, sk first dc, BCRS in next 9 sts, sk next WT, BCRS in next 9 sts, dc in turning ch. Turn. Row 14: Ch 1, sc in each dc and sc across. Turn. (10 sc) Rep rows 79–91 of First LeafShaped End. Fasten off.

FINISHING

Weave in ends. Thread 1 end of cowl through pocket.
