PATTERN NOTES
Weave in loose ends as work progresses. Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated. Chain-2 at beginning of row or round does not count as a stitch unless otherwise stated.
For rows with black spots (rows 3 and 5 for infant and toddler sizes [rows 3, 5 and 7 for child
size]) carry black at start of row and work over it. When changing color from main color to contrasting color and contrasting color to main, do not cut or fasten off until end of row when you will finish off black.
SPECIAL STITCH
(see Stitch Guide) to black, *yo, insert hook in indicated st, yo, draw lp through (3 lps on hook), rep from * twice (7 lps on hook), yo with cherry red and draw through all lps on hook.

Child Size Only
Rnd [1]: Working in ends of rows, join cherry red in any st of toe end of slipper, ch 1, [ sc dec (see Stitch Guide) in next 2 sts] around, do not join. ([10] sc)
All Sizes
Rnd 2: [Sc dec in next 2 sts] around, join in beg sc, leaving 8-inch length, fasten off. Weave rem length through sts of rnd 2, pull to close opening, secure and fasten off.
ANKLE CUFF
Rnd 1 (RS): Working on opposite side of foundation ch of ankle, join black in any ch, ch 2, hdc in same st as beg ch-2, hdc in each rem ch around, join in beg hdc. Fasten off. (20 [26, 34] hdc)
LADYBUG FACE
Rnd 1: With black, ch 3, 8 hdc in 3rd ch from hook, join in first hdc. (8 hdc)
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in same st as beg ch-1, ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 3 chs, sc in same st of rnd 1 at base of antenna, sc in next st, ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of next 3 chs, sc in same st of rnd 1 at base of antenna, 2 sc in each of next 6 sts, join in beg sc, leaving 8-inch length, fasten off. (24 sc)
FINISHING
With Delft blue, embroider French knot (see illustration) eyes below antennae between rnds 1 and 2. With cherry red, embroider straight stitch (see illustration) for mouth and for smile embroider a small st at center of straight stitch. With rem length of black, sew face to slipper centered on rnd 1 of instep.
