Spring Cottage Kitchen Set

MATERIALS

• King Cole Cottonsoft DK light (DK) weight cotton yarn (31/2 oz/ 229 yds/100g per ball): 1 ball each #710 white, #718 Saxe, #1575 cloud, #3211 dusky, #782 silver, #1600 buttercup, #1601 lime and #3030 orange • Size E/4/3.5mm crochet hook or

size needed to obtain gauge • Tapestry needle • Stitch marker • Small amount of polyester

fiberfill • 6 x 8-inch piece of batting • 1/4-inch ball or half-ball black

button • 3/4-inch white button

GAUGE

9 sc = 2 inches; 12 sc rows = 2 inches

PATTERN NOTES

Weave in loose ends as work progresses. Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated. Do not join rounds or turn unless otherwise stated. Place stitch marker at beginning of rounds and move up as each round is completed.

SPECIAL STITCH

Single crochet join (sc join): Place a slip knot on hook, insert hook in indicated st, yo and draw up a lp, yo and pull through both lps on hook.

HOT PAD FRONT

With cloud, ch 25.

Row 1 (RS): Ch 1, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each rem ch across, turn. (24 sc) Rows 2–24: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, change color (see Stitch Guide) to white in last sc, turn. Rows 25 & 26: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, change color to silver in last sc of row 26, turn. Row 27: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn. Row 28: Ch 1, sc in first sc, sc dec (see Stitch Guide) in next 2 sc, sc in each sc across to last 3 sc, sc dec in next 2 sc, sc in last sc, turn. (22 sc) Rows 29–33: Rep row 28. Fasten off. (12 sc)

Row 34: With WS facing, sc join (see Special Stitch) dusky in 4th sc of row 33, sc in next 5 sc, leave rem sts unworked, turn. (6 sc) Rows 35–37: Ch 1, sc in each sc, turn. At end of row 37, fasten off.

Edging

Rnd 1: With RS facing, sc join dusky in 3rd st, sc evenly around piece, working 3 sc in each outer corner and changing color to match, join (see Pattern Notes) in beg sc. Fasten off.

Rnd 2: With RS facing, sc join Saxe in any st, sc in each st around, working 3 sc in center st of each 3-sc group, join in beg sc. Fasten off.

BACK

Working with Saxe throughout, rep Front including Edging rnds.

Window Make 2.

With buttercup, ch 9.

Row 1 (RS): Ch 1, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each rem ch across, turn. (8 sc)

Rows 2–4: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn. At end of row 4, fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. With Saxe, embroider backstitch­es (see illustrati­on) vertically and then horizontal­ly across center of Window.

Shutter Make 4.

With Saxe, ch 9.

Rows 1 & 2: Rep rows 1 and 2 of Window. At end of row 2, fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Door

With Saxe, ch 11.

Row 1 (RS): Ch 1, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each rem ch across, turn. (10 sc)

Rows 2–6: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn. At end of row 6, fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Flower Make 2.

With buttercup, ch 2.

Rnd 1: Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Do not join, place marker (see Pattern Notes) in first st. (6 sc)

Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each sc around, change color to orange in last sc. (12 sc) Rnd 3: Working in front lps

(see Stitch Guide), (sl st, ch 1, hdc) in first sc, (hdc, ch 1) in next sc (petal), *(sl st, ch 1, hdc) in next sc, (hdc, ch 1) in next sc

(petal), rep from * around, join in first unworked back lp of rnd 2. (6 petals) Rnd 4: Working in back lps (see Stitch Guide) of rnd 2, ch 1, dc same back lp as join, (dc, ch 1) in next back lp (petal), *(sl st, ch 1, dc) in next back lp, (dc, ch 1) in next back lp (petal), rep from * around, join in first sl st. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Leaf Make 4.

With lime, ch 6.

Row 1: Sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next ch, 5 dc in last ch, working on opposite side of foundation ch, dc in next ch, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, sl st in last ch. Fasten off, leaving a 20-inch tail for sewing and to embroider chain stitches between Leaves at bottom center of Flowers.

ASSEMBLY Front

Refer to photo as a guide for placement of all pieces on Front. Sew Shutters to each side edge of Windows. Sew black button in place for doorknob on Door. Center Door at bottom edge of Front and sew in place. Position Windows above Door and sew in place. Sew Flower to each side of Door. Sew 2 Leaves under each Flower with narrow ends nearly touching. Secure tail but do not cut. Thread tail on tapestry needle and embroider a few chain stitches (see illustrati­on) for Leaf stems.

Back

Cut batting 1/4- inch smaller than outer edge of Back. With Saxe and running stitches

(see illustrati­on), tack batting in place, catching 1 st invisibly on Back every 1/2 inch so batting won’t shift or bunch when Hot Pad is washed. With WS of Front and Back held tog and working through back lps of both thicknesse­s, sc join Saxe in any st, *sc evenly around, working 3 sc in center sc of each 3-sc group* to center top of piece, ch 15, sc in same st as last sc made, rep between * around, join in beg sc. Fasten off.

TOWEL

Beg at bottom edge, with white, ch 62.

Row 1 (RS): Ch 1, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each rem st across, turn. (61 sc)

Rows 2–6: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.

Row 7: Ch 1, (sc, hdc, dc) in first st, *sk next 2 sts, (sc, hdc, dc) in next st, rep from * across to last 3 sc, sk next 2 sc, sc in beg sc, turn. (61 sts)

Rows 8–10: Rep row 7. Row 11: Ch 1, sc in each st

across, change color (see Stitch Guide) in last st to cloud, turn. Rows 12 & 13: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, change color to white at end of row 13, turn. Row 14: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn. Rows 15–18: Rep row 7. Rows 19–22: Rep rows 11–14, working rows 20 and 21 with buttercup and changing color to white at end of row 21. Rows 23–49: Rep row 7. Row 50: Ch 1, sk first sc, [ sc dec (see Stitch Guide) in next 2 sts] across, turn. (30 sc)

Row 51: Ch 1, sc dec in first 2 sc, [sc dec in next 2 sc] across, turn. (15 sc) Rows 52–54: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, change color to Saxe at end of row 54, turn. FRONT OF COTTAGE

Rows 55–64: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, change color to white at end of row 64, turn.

Rows 65 & 66: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, change color to silver at end of row 66, turn.

Row 67: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.

Row 68: Ch 1, sc in first sc, sc dec in next 2 sc, sc in each sc across to last 3 sc, sc dec in next 2 sc, sc in last sc, turn. (13 sc)

Rows 69–72: Rep row 68, change color to dusky at end of row 72. (5 sc)

Chimney Hanging Lp

Row 73: Ch 1, working in front lps (see Stitch Guide), sc in each sc across, turn. Rows 74–83: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.

Row 84: Ch 1, sc in first sc, ch 3 (buttonhole), sk next 3 sc, sc in last sc, turn. (2 sc, 1 ch-3 sp)

Row 85: Ch 1, sc in first sc, 3 sc in ch-3 sp, sc in last sc, turn. (5 sc)

Row 86: Ch 1, sc in next sc, sc dec in next 3 sts, sc in last sc. Fasten off. (3 sc)

Rnd 87: Ch 1, sc evenly around Front of Cottage, changing colors to match and working 3 sc in each outer corner. Fasten off.

BACK OF COTTAGE

With Saxe, ch 16.

Row 1: Ch 1, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each rem ch across, turn. (15 sc)

Rows 2–18: Working with Saxe only, rep rows 56–72 of Front of Cottage.

Rnd 19: Ch 1, sc evenly around Back of Cottage, working 3 sc in each outer corner. Fasten off.

Joining row: With WS of Front and Back of Cottage held tog, RS of Front facing and working through both thicknesse­s, sc

join (see Special Stitch) Saxe in bottom right corner, sc in ends of rows to Chimney, working 3 sc in each corner, sc in each unworked

back lp (see Stitch Guide) of row 72, sc in ends of rows to bottom left corner, working 3 sc in each corner. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

FINISHING

Stuff Cottage very lightly with fiberfill and sew bottom opening closed. Make 1 Flower and 2 Leaves as made for Hot Pad. Sew in place on center of Front of Cottage, omitting chain-stitched stems. Sew white button in place under buttonhole.
