FIRST ROW

-

As winter gives way to spring and brightly colored crocuses peek out amid the last bits of snow, I make it a personal goal to see how many signs of the season I can find each day. Whether it’s the first buds on the forsythia bush or a glimpse of the sun shimmering through my window just a little earlier each day, it brings joy and a sense of newness to the landscape and my daily routine.

With winter receding and the thoughts of spending more time outdoors, you would think my crochet hook might be put aside or used a little less often. But each spring day and all of nature’s colors energize me even more to try a new stitch, color combination or yarn!

This issue is all about looking for the first signs of spring. We’ve dedicated a whole chapter to projects that are just perfect for shedding the winter doldrums and adding a bit of color to your day. Pretty throws, a floral-inspired granny square rug, a sweet floral motif doily, baskets and more are sure to tempt you to break out your brighter-colored yarns and thread!

You’ll also find a chapter dedicated to a favorite crochet motif— pineapples! If you are new to crocheting pineapple designs, start with the Penelope Pineapple Scarf on page 42, then progress on to the Pineapple Pizzazz Shawl on page 46. Crocheted in a bamboo/ cotton blend yarn, this shawl is the perfect topper for the cool spring days, and the yarn imparts a lovely soft sheen that adds just a bit of a special touch. Have you been crocheting pineapple motifs forever? Try your hand at the stunning Pineapple Delight Throw on page 48. Crocheted in the round, you add more pineapple motifs as you go, creating a visually dramatic statement.

Our up-front features continue the bright, colorful spring theme, so make yourself a cup of tea and take a few minutes to look through this issue. I bet you’ll be adding more crochet time to your list this spring too!

Happy crocheting!
