MATERIALS

• Patons Hempster light (DK) weight hemp/ cotton yarn (31/2 oz/ 190 yds/100g per skein): 2 skeins #11017 sepia 3 skeins #11016 spice • Size F/5/3.75mm crochet hook or

size needed to obtain gauge • Tapestry needle • Sewing needle or sewing

machine • Sepia pillow: ecru cotton fabric

141/2 inches x 181/2 inches: 2 • Spice pillow: ecru cotton fabric

161/2 inches x 161/2 inches: 2 • Ecru sewing thread • Pillow forms or fiberfill

GAUGE

9 ext dc = 2 inches; 4 ext dc rows = 2 inches (before blocking)

PATTERN NOTES

Weave in loose ends as work progresses. Sepia Pillow chart is square; finished piece measures 16 inches wide by 11 inches high before blocking. Block to 18-inchwide by 14-inch-high rectangle. Spice Pillow chart is rectangula­r; finished piece measures 15 inches wide x 131/2 inches high before blocking. Block to 16 inches square. Spice pillow can be crocheted with 2 skeins; 3rd skein is required for tassels. Chain-3 at beginning of row or round counts as first double crochet unless otherwise stated. Chain-5 at beginning of row counts as first double crochet and chain-2 unless otherwise stated. Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated.

SPECIAL STITCHES

Extended double crochet (ext dc): Yo, insert hook in indicated st or sp, yo, draw lp through, yo, draw through 1 lp on hook, [yo, draw through 2 lps on hook] twice. Beginning block (beg block): Ch 3 (see Pattern Notes), ext dc in each of next 3 sts or 2 ext dc in next ch sp, ext dc in next st. Beginning mesh (beg mesh): Ch 5 (see Pattern Notes), sk next 2 sts or chs, ext dc in next st. Mesh: Ch 2, sk next 2 sts or chs, ext dc in next st. Block: Ext dc in each of next 3 sts or 2 ext dc in next ch sp, ext dc in next st. Single crochet join (sc join): Place slip ring (see illustrati­on) on hook, insert hook in indicated st, yo and draw up a lp, yo, draw through both lps on hook.

SEPIA PANEL Make 2.

Row 1: With sepia, ch 74, ext dc (see Special Stitches) in 8th ch from hook (7 sk chs count as first dc, ch 2, sk 2 chs), mesh (see Special Stitches), block (see

Special Stitches) twice, mesh 3 times, block twice, mesh twice, block, mesh twice, block twice, mesh 3 times, block twice, mesh twice, turn. (14 mesh, 9 blocks) Rows 2– 23: Follow chart (see Pattern Notes) rows 2–23, working blocks and mesh as indicated. At the end of row 23, fasten off.

SPICE PANEL Make 2.

Follow rows 2–28, working blocks and mesh as indicated. At the end of row 28, fasten off.

BLOCKING

Block each sepia panel to 18 inches wide x 14 inches high. Block each spice panel to 16 inches x 16 inches.

PILLOW INSERTS

For sepia pillow insert, pin 141/2-inch x 181/2-inch pieces of ecru cotton fabric tog and allowing 1/4- inch seam allowance, sew fabric pieces tog, leaving opening for turning; clip corners, turn to RS. Insert pillow form or fiberfill and sew opening closed.
