Open Shells Hat

PATTERN NOTES

Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated. Chain-3 at beginning of round counts as first double crochet unless otherwise stated. Chain-5 at beginning of round counts as first double crochet and chain-2 unless otherwise stated. If more slouch is desired, work additional sets of rounds 3 and 4 before beginning decrease rounds. If less slouch is desired, wear hat with brim turned up.

SPECIAL STITCHES

Cluster (cl): Yo, insert hook in indicated st or sp and pull up a lp, [yo, insert hook in same st and pull up lp] twice, yo and pull through all 7 lps on hook.

Shell: ( Cl— see Special Stitches, ch 2, cl, ch 2, cl) in indicated st or sp.

Slip ring: Leaving 4-inch end, lap thread over 4-inch end forming lp, insert hook through lp from front to back, yo, pull through lp to form ring, yo, pull through lp on hook (see illustrati­on).

BEANIE BRIM

Row 1: Ch 8, working in back

bar of ch (see illustrati­on), sc in 2nd ch from hook and each rem ch across, turn. (7 sc) Row 2: Ch 1, sc in back lp (see Stitch Guide) only of each st across, turn. Rows 3–63 [3–72, 3–81]: Rep row 2. Fold piece with short ends tog, working through both layers, sl st in back lps only. Turn work so sl st seam (WS) is inside.

Using tapestry needle, weave yarn in and out through tops of rem sts, gather to close. Weave in ends.
