PATTERN NOTES

Weave in loose ends as work progresses. Chain-4 at beginning of round counts as first treble crochet unless otherwise stated. Join with slip stitch unless otherwise stated.

SPECIAL STITCHES

Shell: [(Tr, ch 1) twice, tr] in indicated st or sp. Single crochet join (sc join): Place a slip knot on hook, insert hook in indicated st, yo and pull up a lp, yo and draw through both lps on hook.

COWL Ch 20.

Row 1: Work shell (see Special Stitches) in 7th ch from hook (beg 6 sk chs count as first tr,

2 sk chs), [sk 4 chs, shell in next ch] twice, sk 2 chs, tr in last ch, turn. (3 shells, 2 tr)

Row 2 (RS): Ch 1, sc in first tr, [sc in first tr and ch sp of next shell, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next tr of shell, sc in last ch sp and tr of shell] across, sc in last tr, turn. (20 sc, 3 ch-2 sps) Row 3: Ch 4 (see Pattern Notes), [shell in next ch-2 sp] 3 times, tr in last sc, turn. Row 4: Rep row 2. Rows 5–80: [Rep rows 3 and 4] 38 times. At end of last row, fasten off, leaving long end for sewing. Sew last row to foundation ch of first row to form a circle.

Edging Work twice.

With RS facing and working in ends of rows, sc join (see Special Stitches) yarn in any row, [ch 4, (dc, tr) in 4th ch from hook, sc in next row] around, ch 4, (dc, tr) in 4th ch from hook, join (see Pattern Notes) in first sc. Fasten off.

FINISHING

Block piece. Wind an 18-inch strand of yarn around join. Wind another 18-inch strand likewise at spot directly opposite from join. Sew a pompom to each strand.
