PATTERN NOTES
Weave in loose ends as work progresses. Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated.
SPECIAL STITCHES
Beginning cluster (beg cl): Ch 3, (yo, insert hook into slip ring, yo, draw through a lp, yo, draw through 2 lps on hook) 2 times, yo and draw through all 3 lps.
Cluster (cl): (Yo, insert hook into slip ring, yo, draw through a lp, yo, draw through 2 lps on hook) 3 times, yo and draw through all 4 lps.
Petal join: Ch 1, remove hook, insert hook from front to back in the ch-3 sp of adjacent motif, pick up dropped lp and pull through ch-3 sp, ch 1. (Petal joined at 1 point.)
Overlay Motif Join: Ch 1, remove hook, insert hook from front to back between st 5 and 6 on rnd 2 of a granite motif, pick up dropped lp and pull through, ch 1. (Overlay motif joined at 1 point.)
SCARF FIRST BASE MOTIF
Use granite and size B hook. Rnd 1: Working into slip ring (see illustration) make beg cl (see Special Stitches), ch 10, [ cl (see Special Stitches), ch 10] 5 times. Join (see Pattern Notes) in top of beg cl. (6 cls, 6 ch-10 sps) Rnd 2: 10 sc in each ch-10 sp around. Do not join. (60 sc)
Rnd 3: [Sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc, ch 3, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc] 6 times. Fasten off. (72 sc, 6 ch-3 sps)
JOINING MOTIFS 2nd & 3rd Motifs
Work as for First Base Motif through rnd 2.
Rnd 3: [Sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc, petal join (see Special
Stitches), 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc] 2 times, [sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc, ch 3, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc] 4 times. Fasten off. (72 sc, 4 ch-3 sps, 2 petal joins)
Rem Joining Motifs
Continue making Joining Motifs. Following assembly diagram for join placement, make petal joins as needed to join to adjacent motifs. 51 joining motifs will be made for a total of 52 motifs in the entire scarf.
Overlay Motif
Using icicle and steel hook, work as for base motif through rnd 2.
Rnd 3: [Sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc, ch 1, Overlay Motif Join (see Special Stitches), ch 1, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc] 6 times. Fasten off. (72 sc, 6 overlay motif joins) The number of Overlay Motifs and their placement is determined by the crocheter. The scarf as shown uses 12 Overlay Motifs.
