Windowpane Cowl

PATTERN NOTES

Weave in loose ends as work progresses.

Cowl is crocheted in rows; when finished short edges are sewn together.

Chain-4 at beginning of row counts as first treble crochet unless otherwise stated. Chain-3 at beginning of row counts as first double crochet unless otherwise stated.

SPECIAL STITCH

Single crochet join (sc join):

Place slip knot on hook, insert hook in indicated st, yo, draw up a lp, yo, draw through both lps on hook.

COWL

Row 1 (RS): Loosely ch 153, dc in 4th ch from hook (sk chs count as first dc), dc in each rem ch across, turn. (151 dc)

Row 2: Ch 4 (see Pattern Notes), tr in each of next 2 dc, ch 3, sk next 3 dc, (tr in each of next 3 dc, ch 3, sk next 3 dc) 24 times, ending with dc in top of beg ch-3, turn. (76 tr, 25 ch-3 sps)

Row 3: Ch 3 (see Pattern Notes), (3 dc in next ch-3 sp, dc in each of next 3 tr) 25 times, turn. (151 dc) Rows 4–13: [Rep rows 2 and 3] 5 times. Row 14: Ch 1, sc in same dc as beg ch-1, sc in each rem dc across. Fasten off. (151 sc)

BOTTOM TRIM

Row 1: With RS facing, working in opposite side of foundation ch, sc join (see Special Stitch) in foundation ch, sc in each rem ch across, leaving a 24-inch length of yarn, fasten off.

ASSEMBLY

If desired, block cowl to 71/2 inches by 40 inches.

With RS facing, fold cowl in half and match rows of short ends. Place locking st markers to hold edges in place. Thread tapestry needle with rem length of yarn and sew edges tog by sewing invisible seam (see illustrati­on) back and forth through several points of each st on both sides. Fasten off. Remove markers. CW
