11 sts = 1 inch; 11 rows = 1 inch

All rows have 139 stitches and end with chain 1, turn.

Weave in loose ends as work progresses.

Work extra foundation chains, if desired, to avoid working too few stitches in row 1. Unworked chains can be picked out after row 1 is completed.

I-stitches are worked in stitches of same color 3 rows down.

When changing to next color, do not fasten off last color used. Drop color and carry along wrong side edge of work until next needed.

Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated.

I-stitch (I-st): Dc in base of next st 3 rows down, pulling up lps level with current row. Single crochet join (sc join):

Place a slip knot on hook, insert hook in indicated st, yo and pull up a lp, yo and draw through both lps on hook.

With color A, ch 140.

Row 1 (WS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, change color (see Stitch Guide) to color B, ch 1, turn. (139 sc)

Row 2 (RS): Sc in first sc and in each sc across, ch 1, turn.

Row 3: Sc in first sc and in each sc across, change color to next color, ch 1, turn.

Row 4: Sc in first 3 sts, I-st (see

Special Stitches) in next st 3 rows below, [sc in next 5 sts, I-st in next st 3 rows below] across to last 3 sts, sc in last 3 sts, ch 1, turn.

Row 5: Rep row 3.

Row 6: Sc in first 5 sts, I-st in next st 3 rows below, [sc in next 5 sts, I-st in next st 3 rows below] across to last st, sc in last st, ch 1, turn.

Row 7: Rep row 3.

Row 8: Sc in first st, [I-st in next st 3 rows below, sc in next 5 sts] across row, ch 1, turn.

Rep rows 3–8 until piece measures approximately 243/4 inches long, ending with a color A I-st row, then work row 2. Fasten off all colors and weave in loose ends.

Side & Bottom Seam

Work twice.

With RS tog, fold piece in half with first and last rows held tog at top. Working through both thicknesses in ends of rows, join

(see Pattern Notes) color A in top corner, sl st in each row to last row, sc in last row. Fasten off.

Strap Lps

Make 4.

Place marker in 5th I-st from side seam or where desired. Row 1: Sc join (see Special Stitches) color A in marked st, sc in next sc, ch 1, turn.

Row 2: Sc in each st across, ch 1, turn. Rows 3–14: Rep row 2. At end of last row, fasten off, leaving an 8-inch tail.

Sc join color A in any st at top edge, reverse sc (see Stitch

Guide) in each st around, (working reverse sc in ends of rows of side edges and sl sts in sts of top row) of each Strap Lp, join in beg sc. Fasten off.

Fold each Strap Lp to WS, with large eye needle and end tail, sew to top edge of Tote.

Make 2.

Row 1: With color A and leaving an 8-inch tail, ch 11, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, ch 1, turn. (10 sc)

Row 2: Sc in each st across, ch 1, turn.

Rep row 2 until strap is 20 inches long, unstretched. Do not fasten off.

Edging row: *Reverse sc in end of each row of side edge*, working in opposite side of foundation ch, sl st in each st across, rep between *. Fasten off, leaving an 8-inch tail.

Fold 1 inch of end of Strap to back side, with large eye needle, sew to Strap to form a lp. Rep across other end, taking care to fold end to same side as first lp.

Work twice.

Turn WS of Tote out, fold side seam at bottom of Tote flat with seam in the center and side folded out into a triangle. Flatten evenly and hand- or machine-sew across triangle 21/4 inches from the point to square off bottom. Trim off triangle or tack to bottom as desired.

Line Tote as desired or as follows:

Fold fabric in half with RS tog and 151/2-inch width across top. With 1/2- inch seam allowance, sew side seam. Press seam open and flatten bottom end of seam sides down to form a triangle. Seam will be in center of the triangle.

Measure 2 inches from tip and sew straight across triangle. Trim off triangle. This will square bottom same as on the Tote seams.

Turn top edge of Lining down 1 inch to WS of Lining and press. Attach magnetic clasp as instructed on package. Place Lining in Tote and whipstitch

(see illustration) top of Lining to top edge of Tote.

Remove pin from metal ring. Insert ring through strap. Replace pin in ring, inserting through Strap Lp on Tote. Fasten pin.

Rep for each Strap, ensuring Straps are not twisted.

This classic-style tote crocheted in size 10 thread makes a sturdy project bag you’ll use for years!
