Ginger Purse

CONFIDENT BEGINNER FINISHED MEASUREMEN­TS 10 inches wide x 7 inches high x 1 inch deep (excluding handles) MATERIALS

• Patons Grace light (DK) weight cotton yarn

(13/4 oz/136 yds/50g per skein):

2 skeins each #62027 ginger

and #62008 natural

• Size F/5/3.75mm crochet hook

or size needed to obtain gauge • Tapestry needle

• 1-inch button

• Matching sewing thread and

needle GAUGE 24 sc in front lps only = 4 inches; 22 rows = 4 inches

PATTERN NOTES

Front and Back Panels of Purse are worked separately. Gusset is worked as a border onto the Front Panel and joined to the Back Panel. Handles and Button Tab are made separately and sewn on.

Weave in loose ends as work progresses.

Chain-1 at beginning of row does not count as stitch unless otherwise stated.

Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated.

SPECIAL STITCH

Single crochet join (sc join):

Place a slip knot on hook, insert hook in indicated st, yo and pull up a lp, yo and draw through both lps on hook.

PURSE

FRONT PANEL Row 1 (WS): With ginger, ch 40, sc in back bar (see illustrati­on) of 2nd ch from hook and each ch across, turn. (39 sc)

Back Bar of Chain

Row 2 (RS): Ch 1 (see Pattern Notes), sc in both lps of first st, sc in front lp only (see Stitch Guide) in each st across to last st, sc in both lps of last st, turn. Rows 3–6: Rep row 2, change color (see illustrati­on) to natural in last st of last row.

Single Crochet Color Change

Rows 7–12: With natural, rep row 2. At end of last row change color to ginger in last st.

Rows 13–18: With ginger, rep row 2. At end of last row change color to natural in last st.

Rows 19–54: [Rep rows 7–18] 3 times. At end of last row, do not change color. Fasten off. Border Row 1 (RS): Sc join (see Spe

cial Stitch) natural in first st of row 54, sc in each st across to last st, 3 sc in last st for corner, rotate work, sc in side of each row across, rotate work, working in unused lps of foundation ch, 3 sc in first st for corner, sc in each sc across, turn. (136 sc)

Row turn. 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across, Rows 3–6: Rep row 2, fasten off. BACK PANEL

Make same as Front Panel. At end of Border row 1, fasten off. ASSEMBLY

With WS facing, sew Front and Back Panels tog, matching sts of last Border row of each Panel. TOP BORDER Rnd 1 (RS): Sc join ginger in any st of top edge of Purse, sc in each st and in the side of each row around, join (see Pattern Notes) in first sc.

Rnd 2: Sl st in each st around, join to beg sl st, fasten off. BUTTON TAB Row 1 (RS): With ginger, ch 30, sc in back bar of 2nd ch from hook and each st across, turn. (29 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. Row 3: Rep row 2. Row 4: Ch 1, sc in first 2 sts, ch 4, sk next 4 sts, sc in next st and each st across, turn. (25 sc, 1 ch-4 sp) Row 5: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, working 4 sc in ch-4 sp, turn. (29 sc)

Row 6: Rep row 2.

Row 7 (edging): Ch 1, sc in each st across to last st, 3 sc in last st, rotate work, sc in side of each row across, 3 sc in corner, rotate work, sc in each st across, 3 sc in corner, rotate work, sc in side of each row across, 3 sc in corner, join to beg sc, fasten off. HANDLE Make 2. Row 1 (RS): With ginger, ch 67, sc in back bar of 2nd ch from hook and in each st across, turn. (66 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.

Rows 3–7: Rep row 2, fasten off.

Fold each Handle in half lengthwise, with WS facing tog. Working through both thicknesse­s, sc join ginger in 8th st from right, sc across to last 7 sts, fasten off. FINISHING

Sew Button Tab, centered, on center ginger stripe on RS of Back Panel so that Tab edge is 11/4 inch from top edge.

Fold Tab over to front. Position button under Tab so that it aligns with buttonhole. Move Tab away and sew button in place on Front Panel with matching sewing thread.

Sew 1 Handle to WS of Front Panel, centering each flat edge of Handle at the top edge of the 2nd ginger stripe from each outer edge. Rep to sew rem Handle to Back Panel in the same manner.
