GAUGE

4 shells = 4 inches; 8 rows = 4 inches Take time to check gauge.

PATTERN NOTES

Swoncho is worked top down from yoke, increasing in 4 corners. The yoke is then divided into sleeves and body, and a few more rounds are worked on the body to get to the desired length. The entire Swoncho is worked in rounds with the right side facing; do not turn until instructed for last round of the neckline edging, which is worked on the wrong side.

Weave in loose ends as work progresses.

Join with slip stitch in 3rd chain of starting chain unless otherwise stated.

Chain-3 at beginning of round counts as first double crochet unless otherwise stated.

Chain-4 and 1 double crochet in first stitch count as first V-stitch.

SPECIAL STITCHES

V-stitch (V-st): (dc, ch 1, dc) in same st or sp. V-stitch increase (V-st inc): (V-st, ch 3, V-st) in indicated st or sp. Shell: 5 dc in same st or sp.

Corner shell: 5 dc in ch-3 sp of

V-st inc.

Twisted sc (tsc): Insert hook in next st, pull up a lp (keep both lps on hook loose), rotate the hook counterclo­ckwise (lps rem on hook), yo and pull through both lps.

SWONCHO YOKE

Rnd 1: Ch 112, join with sl st in first ch to work in the rnd. Ch 4, dc in first st (see Pattern Notes), [ch 1, sk 3 chs, V-st (see

Pattern Stitches) in next ch] 3 times, ch 1, sk 3 chs, V-st inc

(see Special Stitches) in next ch, [ch 1, sk 3 chs, V-st in next ch] 5 times, ch 1, sk 3 chs, V-st inc in next ch, [ch 1, sk 3 chs, V-st in next ch] 7 times, ch 1, sk 3 chs, V-st inc in next ch, [ch 1, sk 3 chs, V-st in next ch] 5 times, ch 1, sk 3 chs, V-st inc in next ch, [ch 1, sk 3 chs, V-st in next ch] 3 times, ch 1, join (see Pattern Notes). Rnd 2: Ch 3 (see Pattern Notes), 4 dc in first ch-1 sp, shell (see

Special Stitches) in ch-1 sp of each of next 4 V-sts, corner shell (see Special Stitches), shell in ch-1 sp of each of next 7 V-sts, corner shell, shell in ch-1 sp of each of next 9 V-sts, corner shell, shell in ch-1 sp of each of next 7 V-sts, corner shell, shell in ch-1 sp of each of last 4 V-sts, join. (36 shells)

Place a st marker in center dc of each corner shell.

Rnd 3: Sl st in next 2 dc, ch 4, dc in same st as last sl st, *V-st in center dc of each shell to marked corner shell, V-st inc in marked st; rep from * 3 times, V-st in center dc of each rem shell, join. (40 V-sts)

Rnd 4: Ch 3, 4 dc in ch-1 sp of first V-st, *shell in ch-1 sp of each V-st to corner ch-3 sp, corner shell in ch-3 sp; rep from * 3 times, shell in ch-1 sp of each rem V-st. (44 shells)

Rep rnds 3 and 4 until you have completed 18 [20, 22, 24] rnds and have 100 [108, 116, 124] shells.

BODY

Rnd 1: Sl st in next 2 dc, ch 4, dc in same st as last sl st, *V-st in center dc of each shell to marked corner shell, V-st in marked st, sk all sts to next marked st for sleeve, V-st in next marked corner st; rep from * once more, V-st in center dc of each rem shell, join. (54 [58, 62, 66] V-sts) Rnd 2: Ch 3, 4 dc in ch-1 sp of first V-st, shell in ch-1 sp of each rem V-st, join. (54 [58, 62, 66] shells)

Rnd 3: Sl st in next 2 dc, ch 4, dc in same st as last sl st, V-st in center dc of each shell to end of rnd, join.

Rep rnds 2 and 3 until you have 24 [26, 28, 30] rnds of Body. Fasten off.

NECKLINE EDGING

Rnd 1 (RS): Join in foundation ch underneath first V-st, ch 1, sc in same ch as join, sc in each rem ch around, join in first sc, turn. (112 sc) Rnd 2 (WS): Ch 1, sc in first st, tsc (see Special Stitches) in each rem st, join in first sc. Fasten off.

FINISHING
