PATTERN NOTES
You will not need an afghan hook; a standard crochet hook will work just fine. For strength and practicality, each square is backed with stiff craft felt; just whipstitch a length of yarn through the back loop of the single crochet edging.
Weave in loose ends as work progresses.
Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated.
Cut felt in 6 squares, each 4 inches square.
COASTERS
Make 1 each color. Foundation Row: With size
H hook, ch 15.
Forward pass: Starting with 2nd ch from hook, draw up 1 lp in each back bar of each chain (see illustration) across. (15 lps)
Return pass: Work lps off
hook (see illustration), yo, draw through first lp on hook, [yo, draw through 2 lps on hook] rep across until 1 lp rem, place last lp on size E hook.
Row 1 (RS): Insert hook under first vertical bar from hook, work 1 sc in each bar across, turn.
Row 2 (WS): Ch 1, sc through both lps of each sc across, turn, place rem lp on size H hook.
Row 3: Forward Pass: Working in both lps of sc, draw up a lp in each sc across. (15 lps)
Return Pass: Yo, draw through first lp on hook, [yo, draw through 2 lps on hook] rep across until 1 lp rem, place last lp on size E hook.
Rows 4–15: [Rep rows 1–3] 4 times.
Row 16: Rep row 1.
Row 17: Rep row 2, turn, do not fasten off, continue with size E hook.
EDGING
Rnd 1: Ch 1, work 15 sc across each side of coaster and 1 extra sc in each corner, join (see Pattern Notes) in beg sc, fasten off. (64 sc)
ASSEMBLY
With sharp tapestry needle and 1 yard of café au lait, working in back lps only (see Stitch
Guide), whipstitch felt square to WS of coaster around, weave a length of rem yarn inside coaster. Fasten off.
