HOW DO WE MOUNT AN ONBOARD IPAD?

-

I just read Andrew Burton’s article, “A Place for Everything,” in the recent Cruising World (March 2020). We have a Tartan 4400 and are also redoing most of our navigation instruments and nav-station wiring, adding AIS, Iridium Go, etc. I saw the mounted ipad and wondered how he accomplished its secure attachment. We would like to do the same, and our configuration of the nav station is similar.

Via Email Andrew Burton replies: Nice boat. I delivered a 4400 once and really liked it. I used 3M Dual Lock to secure the ipad. It’s kind of a plastic Velcro-type product—very strong and secure. But any good hook-andloop fastener would do, I imagine. The ipad doesn’t weigh that much. I drilled a small hole in the mounting bulkhead and led the charging wire behind it to an outlet.

There is no chance water can get to my nav table; it’s well forward of the

hatch. If there is the slightest chance a splash could get to yours, you will want to get a waterproof housing for the ipad. Hope all that helps. Good luck with your project.
