Fremont High’s Garcia wins CCS wrestling title
Three other Fremont girls wrestlers placed second
Fremont High School’s Annabel Garcia was not fazed by facing No. 1 seed Mikayla Silverman of Gunn in the 150-pound final of the Central Coast Section Girls Wrestling Championships on Feb. 22.
Garcia, the No. 2 seed, outlasted Silverman 15-11 in the final to earn a trip to the California Interscholastic Federation state championships this week at Bakersfield’s Rabobank Arena. The top four placers in each division at the CCS girls championships advanced to the state championships, which run Feb. 27-29.
Fremont had three additional wrestlers who placed second in their divisions at the CCS championships and will also be making the trip to Bakersfield. Melissa Lee reached the 101 final, Annie Hua was edged 3-1 in overtime by Gilroy’s Emmily Patneaud in the 143 final, and Hana Duus was a 160 finalist. Fremont placed fourth as a team with 121.5 points. Menlo-atherton was the team champion with 162 points.
Wilcox also has two wrestlers who qualified for the state tournament. Morgane Gaucher (126) and Marina Mcneil-vivanco (235) both placed third in their divisions.
Boys wrestling
Three local athletes placed in the top three at the CCS Boys Wrestling Championships on Feb. 22 and moved on to for the CIF state tournament at Bakersfield’s
Rabobank Arena. The top three placers in each division at the CCS championships qualified for the state championships, which run Feb. 27-29.
In the 285-pound division final, Fremont’s TJ Takafua fell to four-time CCS champion Nicholas Villarreal of Gilroy 6-0. Fremont’s Mark Ramirez (106) and Santa Clara’s Dezi Johnson (182) placed third in their respective divisions at the CCS championships.
Boys basketball
Santa Clara and Wilcox were among the final eight teams in the CCS Division II playoffs. Santa Clara, the No. 2 seed, hosted No. 7 Christopher in a quarterfinal game on Feb. 25 after this publication went to press.
Wilcox, the No. 9 seed, traveled to No. 1 Hillsdale for a Feb. 25 game. The semifinals were Feb. 27 and the final is Feb. 29.
Wilcox reached the quarterfinals with a 53-37 victory at No. 8 Pioneer on Feb. 22.
The visiting Chargers outscored Pioneer 19-5 in the final quarter to take command of the game.
The King’s Academy, the No. 5 seed in the Division IV playoffs, also advanced to the quarterfinals on Feb. 25. It traveled to face No. 4 Santa Cruz. The King’s Academy won its second-round game 75-45 over No. 12 San Jose. The Division IV semifinals are Feb. 27 and the final is Feb. 29.
Girls basketball
Lynbrook (21-4), the No. 8 seed in the CCS Open Division playoffs, fell to No. 1 Archbishop Mitty 9235 in the first round Feb. 21.
However, since Lynbrook was selected to compete in the elite Open Division, it will advance to next week’s CIF Northern regional playoffs.
The King’s Academy, the No. 3 seed in the Division IV playoffs, hosted No. 6 Mercy-san Francisco in a quarterfinal game on Feb. 25. The semifinals are Feb. 27 and the final is Feb. 29.
Boys soccer
Wilcox moved on to the CCS Division II semifinals with a 1-0 victory over No. 4 Burlingame. Wilcox, the No. 5 seed, faced No. 1 Branham on Feb. 26 after this publication went to press. The final is Feb. 29.
Girls soccer
Homestead, the No. 2 seed in the CCS Division II playoffs, shut out No. 7 Prospect 2-0 in a firstround game on Feb. 22. The Mustangs hosted No. 3 Santa Cruz on Feb. 26 in a semifinal matchup after this publication went to press. The final is Feb. 29.
