Race blazes a virtual trail for local nonprofit
Local residents who want to support the trails they run or walk on can participate in the 27th annual Trailblazer Race held by the Friends of Stevens Creek Trail.
As with last year, this year’s fundraising race will be virtual due to public health concerns. Runners and walkers have from Sept. 11-26 to complete a 5K or 10K run or 3-mile walk, or a combination of these.
Participants can run or walk their chosen route anywhere — even on the treadmill at home — to make social distancing easier. In the spirit of competition, all who upload their race results for the 5K or 10K will be able to compare rankings at the end of the event.
All proceeds help advocacy for extensions, improvements and protection of the wildlife corridors along the Stevens Creek and Permanente Creek trails.
Besides raising money, the Friends of Stevens Creek Trail see the Trailblazer
Race as an opportunity to promote community involvement and pride in the completion, enhancement and enjoyment of trails and wildlife corridors in the Stevens Creek watershed.
The Stevens Creek Trail is currently just over 5 miles long and runs through Cupertino, Mountain View and Los Altos. The Linda Vista extension of the trail, located between Mcclellan Road and Linda Vista Park, opened to the public in June, making Cupertino’s segment of the trail about 1.3 miles long. According the Friends, work is underway to extend the trail south to Fremont Avenue in Sunnyvale.
Registration for the Trailblazer Race is $40 at trailblazer.itsyourrace. com and includes a Tshirt that will be mailed to participants after the event, along with coupons for Hobee’s California Restaurants. For more information, visit stevenscreektrail.org/events/ trailblazer.html.
