Restroom discussion continues
Park Board recommends new appointee
BROKEN BOW - The question of whether or not there should be a restroom in the Square in downtown Broken Bow is one that the city Park Board continues to discuss.
Some time ago, the city’s park crew built a structure with the idea it could be used as a restroom in one of the city’s parks. At Monday’s park board meeting, the board discussed whether or not the ready-made structure could be placed in the Square as a temporary restroom and where it should be placed.
The northwest corner of the Square has been considered as a potential location for a permanent restroom. Water and sewer lines were put in place during the downtown project. The park board also discussed placing a temporary structure on the east side of the Square where the Porta-Potties are set during summer months.
During discussion, the board reviewed the concern of citizens brought to them at previous meetings - how a restroom building would look as well as questions about keeping it clean and secure.
Board member Pam Schweitzer acknowledged the public wants something that looks nice and added that the structure would “be an upgrade” from Porta-Potties and would be considered temporary as the city continues to mull over the question of a permanent restroom.
The board decided to table the project for further discussion. Board member Jeff Oeltjen asked Park Superintendent Darren Marten to bring a photo of the structure to the next park board meeting which will be in January. The board plans to continue discussion before taking a recommendation to the City Council.
Marten said if approved, the structure would likely not be moved until April or May.
In other business, the board discussed the possibility of charging people who stay in tents at the RV park a fee to cover usage of electricity and water.
The board approved the application of Nikki Altig to the park board. A position was left vacant when Carleen Albin resigned last month. Board members said Altig has taken over the All-inclusive playground project now that Albin has moved from the area.
The board also briefly discussed the installation of a drinking fountain donated by the Lions Club at Melham Park. Marten reported the exact location will depend upon the location of the All-inclusive playground and other park enhancements, such as a sand volleyball court.
The park board meets once a month, however the board is considering meeting twice a month during the busiest months for the city parks (May-August).
