- BY TIM CONOVER Sports Editor

The Broken Bow boys and girls basketball team traveled to Loup City to play the Arcadia/Loup City Rebels for both team’s openers Dec. 5.

The Lady Indians took an early 14-6 lead after the first quarter and never looked back as they beat the Lady Rebels 61-44.

Kya Scott led the Indians with 16 points followed by Majesta Valasek with 13. Kailyn Scott scored 9 points, Joscelyn Coleman, Kali Staples and Emily Trotter each had 6 points, Sydney Carrizales had 3 and Emma Schall 2.

Mariah Markus led the Rebels with 13 points followed by Nadia VanSlyke with 11. Capri Dethlefs added 7 points, McKenna Cruikshank 6, Creighton Harrington 4, Jentri Hurlburt 2 and Ashley Chilenski 1.

The Lady Rebels traveled to Pleasanton Dec. 6 and ended up losing 65-49. They are now 1-1 after their first week of play.

Broken Bow Head Coach Kelly Cooksley stated that he was mostly pleased with their first game of the year. They had a little bit of rust but overall he liked how they played. The Indians put up 75 shots which was encouraging to see. They also forced 36 turnovers but he would have liked to have seen them convert on those a little better. Broken Bow made ten 3 pointers which tied a school record which is encouraging.

After the girl’s game, the boys got their season underway.

After the first quarter Broken Bow led the Rebels 11-10. However, in the second quarter the Indians only scored 2 points as they went in to half time down 22-13.

Broken Bow was never really able to recover from that as they ended up losing to the Rebels 46-33.

Jadyn Scott led the scoring for the Rebels with 12 followed by Prestyn Rogers with 11.

Arcadia/Loup City Head Coach Aaron Habe stated that after the first 6 minutes or so they played a solid game. He was pleased with their defensive effort. That is a big focus for them this season. They are going to be missing a few players for at least another week but he thought the young guys that came in did a good job to help them with the win.

Arcadia/Loup City traveled to Pleasanton Dec. 6 and got another win as they beat the Bulldogs 55-42. The Rebels are now 2-0 after their first week of play.

Broken Bow hosted NPSP Dec. 6 for their first game of the season in front of the home

crowd as the Lady Indians looked for their second win and the boys their first.

The Lady Indians defeated NPSP 53-37. Kali Staples led the way with 16 points followed by Kya scott with 12. Majesta Valsek added another 9 points followed by Joscelyn Coleman and Kassidy Cyboron with 6 each, and Lindsay Schauda and Kailyn Scott with 2 each.

Head Coach Kelly Cooksley stated that Broken Bow had not beaten NPSP since 2008 and has a record of 2-14 against them since the 2003-04 season so this was a great win for their program. NPSP is a perennial powerhouse so it is always a good early barameter on how your team is. Broken Bow got punched in the mouth early getting down a few occassions late in the first qaurter but the girls always responded with a run.

Cooklsey stated that he was really impressed with the Lady Indians defensive pressure in the first half. The girls were flying around making plays and causing chaos. They forced 27 turnovers while turning the ball over 15 times themselves. Broken Bow also did a nice job of hitting the offensive glass with 15 ofensive rebounds.

The Lady Indians start their season 2-0. They host Amherst Dec. 10 before traveling to Minden Dec. 13. The results will be in next week’s paper.

After the girls, the boys took the court. Broken Bow found themselves up 14-12 against NPSP after the first quarter. In the second quarter the Indians struggled to find the basket as they only scored 7 points. They went in to half time down 35-21.

NPSP took control of the second half as the Indians ended up losing 60-39.

Broken Bow Head Coach Nathan olson stated that their first two games saw some of their players put in tough positions with having little or no experience. He thought the team worked hard and learned some good lessons from each game. They are always trying to improve and at this time they are looking forward to a week of practice to continue to get better. Coach Olson is looking forward to continue to work with this group as they continue to grow as a team.

The Broken Bow boys start their season 0-2 as they look for their first win Dec. 13 against Minden on the road.
