Devotion: Don’t procrastinate with priorities

- BY ROGER SLOAN Lillian Church of Christ

You might not know it, but I tend to be a procrastinator, always have been. It takes an immense amount of will and discipline to put in the office time that is needed. I would much rather be out visiting people or physically working on something. But office time? I’d rather put it off.

I have difficulty meeting deadlines for bulletins and newsletters. To be honest, I’m writing this now on Friday (the day it’s due) instead of last week or the week before like some of my colleagues.

I was invited once to join the Procrastinators Club and, after the second or third invitation, they finally made me an honorary member because I never got around to joining.

Interestingly, it’s not just work I procrastinate on. I even procrastinate on things I enjoy. I have only gone fishing once last year. Our little boat has not even seen a lake in a couple years. I just kept putting it off and now? Well, maybe this year.

Friends, there are things in this life that we tend to put off.

And many of them are really not important. But there are things in life that must be top priority.

We mentioned in Worship Sunday we have a job to do. First is our personal relationship with Jesus and secondly our relationship with our wife/ husband and children, (including of course their Salvation ). After that comes brothers and sisters in Christ and friends and those we meet.

Don’t forget daily time in God’s word and prayer. And, of course, breathing. All these things we can not afford to put off.

Jesus said what good will it do if we gain the whole world and lose our souls. Take a few minutes today and contemplate what is really important to get done in this life time. Write it down and keep it in front of you. Then ask God to help you go in that direction.
