Gerald ‘Jerry’ Sloggett

Gerald “Jerry” D. Sloggett, 88, of Loup City, Neb. went with the angels Monday, April 12, 2021 on a beautiful spring morning surrounded by family at his home at Sherman Reservoir near Loup City.

Gerald “Jerry” Devern Sloggett was born Sept. 28, 1932 in Broken Bow to Wesley and Dorothy (VanDyke) Sloggett. Jerry grew up and attended school in Broken Bow, Papillion and Bellevue. After high school Jerry enlisted in the United States Army and served his country from 1950 until 1953. He was honorably discharged after his service.

Jerry married Ruth Stevens on June 7, 1953 in Broken Bow. To this union six children were born Joni (David) Ritchie of Sargent, Michael (Katie) Sloggett of Eaton, Colo., Steven Sloggett (Betty Gayley) of Lincoln, Craig (Annette) Sloggett of Kearney, Kent (Wendy) Sloggett of Broken Bow and Jeanette (Doug) Birnie of Broken Bow.

Also left to carry on his memory are his siblings Gordon (Jane) Sloggett of Stillwater, Okla., Charles (Wanda) Sloggett of Custer, S.D. and Nancy (Clay Pressley) of Fresno, Calif.; brothers-in-law Donald (Elaine) Stevens of Mountain Home, Idaho and George (Kathy) Witte of North Platte; and sister-in-law Glenna Markham of Aurora. Jerry and Ruth have 15 grandchild­ren and 21 great-grandchild­ren.

Jerry worked as a builder, the Old Home breadman, a contractor and a businessma­n. With his wife and family, they owned and operated the Dairy Queen Restaurant for 10 years.

Together, Jerry and Ruth raised their six children and had countless adventures over the years. During their marriage they lived in several different communitie­s in central Nebraska and one year in Florida. The couple purchased a cabin at Sherman Lake in Loup City 33 years ago which has been their permanent home for the past 11 years. The cabin was a fun, adventure filled place for many family gatherings over the years.

Jerry was a member of the United Methodist Church for over 50 years and served on the Church board a number of years. He was also a member of the American Legion and was very civic-minded serving on several county boards over the years.

Jerry enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time with his family. He also enjoyed playing pool and cards. Jerry was a jack-of-all trades and could fix anything.

Greeting Jerry in heaven are his parents Wesley and Dorothy Sloggett; brothers Eugene and James Sloggett; great grandson Dylan Dzingle; and father-in-law and mother-in-law Herb and Pearl Stevens.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 17 at the Community Building in Loup City. Dean Millsap and Reverend Lori Stevens officiated and a lunch followed.

Military honors provided by the Loup City American Legion Post #48 and Army National Guard were held outside the Community Building following the service.

Visitation was 4-6 p.m. Friday, April 16 at the Community Building.

Cremation was to follow the service. Burial of the ashes will be held at a later date at the Broken Bow Township Cemetery.

Masks or face coverings were recommende­d as well as social distancing.

Memorials are suggested to the Sherman County Senior Center in Loup City, Custer County Diamond Youth Organizati­on in Broken Bow or donor’s choice.

Higgins Funeral Home in Loup City is in charge of arrangemen­ts.
